1964 GE Americana Refrigerator & Stove ....SET !

How rare is this: 1964 GE Americana Refrigerator & matching Stove being sold out of Indiana for $1200 OBO. Sale info through John Jower's site, Antique Appliances.

I've had John restore a 1964 Americana fridge for me and they do thoroughly superb work with true 'restoration ethic' - but you will pay for it (!) and wait list is considerable (I waited 2 full years). They got everything right - even managing to find actual vintage gold flecked formica for the breakfront!

John is a cool guy - his father was Marvin Jowers who was a General Electric appliance executive in the 50s and 60s and was present at a show in Las Vegas unveiling the '64 Americana...aka The World's Fair Fridge. Thats him in the black/white pic. And thats my fridge pictured in his Georgia restoration shop.

Spacepig! Oooof! Your turquoise set is the bomb! I just picked up a '65 Turquoise Americana but only with the upper convection, no lower oven. But seller threw in his sink as part of deal so...I feel special! lol...

The '65 has the push button controls instead of your awesome dials... is that '64 model? So Is your fridge for show or does it earn its keep? Any chance of seeing interior shots? And wow on the pink Americana - what a gorgeous girl...

Thank you, Johny. The refrigerator is working and is supposed to be moved into our kitchen soon. We're in the process of installing some old metal Geneva cabinets, and once those go in, we'll be bringing the refrigerator. I really didn't want/need the matching stove, but the lady would only sell them as a pair. I'm not sure of the year, as it has a different interior than the pink (which has the same interior as yours. Both the pink and blue fridges have the ice maker.

I'm envious of your sink! I found a NOS sink, but it's only 24" wide and I'm not sure if we'll be able to get it to work since the countertop hole is cut for a normal size. Jeannine

I'm curious about your Genevas - are they in great condition already paint-wise or are you considering spraying? How to match original vintage factory color precisely?

I once sprayed an entire kitchen set at automotive shop. But it was white and they didn't have to match any already existing original color....so I wasn't that nervous and they came out looking over-the-moon incredible.

The Genevas are not in the best shape. They were pink, but the outsides were extremely faded and there were lots of gouges and scrapes. I repainted the faces white, but left the interiors the original pink. I have a bunch of pink GEs that are in great shape (inside and out), but the outsides will also be painted white, with the interiors kept original. One of the drawers of the GEs were painted white by an auto body shop and it looks great. The person I bought them from had a friend paint it to see how it looked in white, but she ultimately decided to get rid of them. They came with the pink Americana refrigerator, and were original to the house.

I prefer the later models with the pushbutton controls on the upper oven panel. Does anyone know if any were made in Turquoise with the newer control location?

Make Sure it has the Exhaust System

I remember growing up with that ge double oven range, but the one we had didn't have the exhaust system in it, and my mom hated it with a passion. Any time you used the back burners and it created steam, it would condense on the bottom of the upper oven and drip down. Also, the steam would come up and coat the upper oven with steam and water, a constant wiping to keep it clean. The ovens worked great, but the sensi-temp kept going out on the front burner. Mom, got really ticked with this range and it went out to the curb, and a new Corning range went in, in its place, what a nice change. She loved that new Corning range. If you get that GE American range make sure it has the exhaust system in it.

Hi Doug - I have just the upper oven & cook-top set and had it shipped straight to my storage spot in Jersey....I haven't even had chance to play with yet - am I right in assuming that top chrome panel is pop-out fan?

Push Button locations

Tom - do you mean like the one in this picture? I purchased this recently although haven't had chance to install yet.

Johny, an aunt had that in a high-rise apartment in Houston.  The front of that flips up like a garage door and that's where the fan is. there are two pushbutton switches under the control panel that turn on the surface light or the fan.   I don't think simply flipping up the "garage door" turns on the fan, but I could be wrong.

Another variation of the GE Americana hi-lo range

Here's one of the earlier models with the larger push button controls on the side of the cook top. It's not a self cleaner, but I can't tell if where the self cleaning latch would be is a blank panel, or is one of the models that had the window to look down on the oven interior.

Hey there Bob! And doesn't the Frigidaire Flair stove also have a version of the 'garage-door' fan? I swear I've seen one in some photos...

Johny, I remember Flairs do have an option exhaust system, but I don't remember if it's simply the "garage door" style.

The exhaust fan on the Americana pulls out like a drawer and turns on when it is open. I've not seen one with a "garage door" version.
