Land Rover sprung a coolant leak at back of engine and may need to come deep apart to correct,so secondary snow vehicle being readied :)Need to take instrument cluster out to replace bulb,so will also look into fixing intermittent fuel gauge problem-could be cluster, sender,or connections in between...:)-wondering if anyone here has fixed this problem with a 1995-98 chevy truck and what the cure was? Heater blower switch plug was burnt up,but that has been fixed now :)

My experience

with GM fuel gauge ('03 Impala) was that after about 80,000 miles, it read full until almost empty, but then the low fuel light came on, and the gauge would drop to 3/4 full. You had to gas up before you drove another 20 miles or so. I never repaired it, the car was too old. I used the trip odometer for a fuel gauge.
May I have read that alcohol in the gasoline was the culprit ruining the sending units, as with Catalytic converters?

Earlier GM fuel gauges reliable

The 1965-early 1990s GM fuel gauges have been 100% reliable in my experience 1968,69,74,77,82 vehicles, but not very linear-that last 1/4 tank goes fast! :).
Fuel gauge messed up on my '85 F150 too-"E" is full,3/4 tank empty :)GM gauge movements are magnetic, while Ford is thermal type where a bi-metal strip that moves the needle is warmed by a tiny nichrome heat wire wound around it.

possible cause found

got the cluster out and changed the bad bulbs(4 bad,6 total)found nothing wrong with the gauge, but cluster plug did not seem overly tight and gauge problem gone after cluster reinstalled,so I know where to look if problem reoccurs...
