Hotpoint Dishwasher in Richmond, VA

I was contacted this morning by a seller of a late 40's Hotpoint dishwasher.

I was directed to your website by someone who replied to my Richmond, VA Craigs List ad for same. She suggested that I contact you regarding my sale of this item. I would love to see this go to a good home, but I don't seem to know how to get it there! Can you help me? Thank you very much. ---Jim Donithan.

Just be advised, the seller is asking $600 for this dishwasher which I believe is very overpriced since this machine is not all that rare. Be sure to ask the condition of the impeller, if it is chipped or broken unless you find another one the machine will not clean very well.

This is really interesting......

and worth a closer look if you are at all interested in early dishwashers.

The seller has included a web link in his Craigslist ad (I've included the link here as well) to the Pittsburg Post-Gazette. There about ten (10) fully scanned newspaper pages from July 24, 1949 containing ads and articles largely slanted towards Hotpoint and GE Dishwashers, plus water heaters and much more. [There are 'Zoom in' and 'Zoom out' and 'Fit to Height' buttons to enhance navigation overtop of the newspaper pages.]

We even have some history of the dishwasher included in some articles, hints on improving dishwasher performance. There are several Pittsburg appliance stores advertising the latest Hotpoint and GE Electric Sinks, including purchase prices. This is a really great way for us to know what these machines were being sold for new in 1949.

The Hotpoint Electric Sink was advertised at $499.95. The stand-along model was advertised at $289.95. The exact same 1949 GE Electric Sink as the one I have, was advertised at $364.95.

The seller is advertising his 60 year old Hotpoint undercounter model for $600, which I agree with Robert - that it is hugely overpriced. IMO, $150-$200 would be a more reasonable price to pay. I would certainly want to know which parts he feels need to be replaced to make this machine operational. And new Hotpoint and GE Impellers are extremely rare and hard to fine.

on the hotpoint dishwasher. was curious about that 30 minute "spray' followed by a 5 minute "wash" then all subsequent "sprays" are 10 seconds??!!

what is a spray compared to a wash?

why would the first be 30 minutes and all the rest 10 seconds?

inquiring minds want to know, at least mine!

mike, do you have any ideas? you are into the vintage hotpoint impeller machines.

I saw that too, and I'm sure it is a mis-print. It should have read 30 seconds.

I have not attempted to run either my 1948 or 1950 Hotpoint Dishwashers yet. That's a project for perhaps this winter. My 1948 is just like the machine being advertised here.

Well, you could place a decimal point between the 6 and the
first zero; or perhaps add a zero and place a decimal point
between the first zero and the second two zeros!!

What a great solution to his problem, and for one of us who would go in and carefully take this beauty out.

That was exactly what I did with my 1954 Westinghouse pull-out dishwasher. I convinced the seller to let me do the removal, because I knew that Lowe's would trash the machine. Here it is two hours after we began taking it out.
