Whirlpool Calypso, further updates...

Thanks to DADoES, I got a lot deeper into further troubleshooting the Calypso.

I cycled through all the diagnostics, and disassembled the pump (clean). I was a little stumped because it pumped out, and made plenty of gurgling noises during the recirculate mode. So I removed the plastic top of the outer-drum. Googling an exploded view shows a recirculation tube that is missing on my machine.

Drained as much water as possible from the sump, and cannot see any sign of the tube somehow falling to the bottom. So it appears I am missing a rather important part.

Anyone know if this is something I can purchase from an appliance repair store, or does someone have an extra they'd like to sell?

The tube simply presses down onto a stub at bottom of the tub and a tab fits into the hole at the top to anchor it.  Odd that it's missing.  They may come loose from the anchor tab and I suppose could contact the basket and get damaged.  I can't imagine the previous owner removed it without replacement ... that obviously makes the machine ineffective!

Calypso parts are available.  The tube (8054989) is a tad expensive for what it is.  SearsPartsDirect.com lists it at $37.52.  PartsTap.com $34.18.  RepairClinic.com $51.50.  AppliancePartsPros.com $34.24.  I don't find any on eBay at the moment.

I have a used spare that's kinda grungy.  It's 26.5" in length and doesn't flex, would have to scrounge-up a suitable package for sending.  USPS offers a mailing tube that should work, if the post orifice here has them.  Don't know what'd be the mailing cost, can try checking on the postage scale at work.

Thanks for showing a picture.. It looks like it wouldn't be that hard to fab one from PVC... Could you tell me what the inside diameter is at the bottom, where it pushed onto the tub? It's worth a shot at Home Depot since I have clothes to wash!

As far as "why" it's missing... I couldn't begin to guess!

These measurements are not engineering-precise. 

The bottom is 1-1/8" ID, flexible rubber to press on to the sump port.  A "duckbill"-sort of check valve is integral to the lower end connector, which I believe functions to help block sucking air during drain (there's also a duckbill in the drain hose to block air during recirculation).  Can't say how crucial is that to proper functioning.  This one, the duckbill looks to be a bit deformed, possibly dried-out after a long period of non-use.  As I vaguely recall, the new tube I installed on the machine I'm using was in proper form.

Note also there's a vent hole at the end behind the duckbill.

The top must have the formed spout to direct the water flow through the port in the tub ring.

The tube itself is 22-1/4" length, slightly flattened/oval except at the ends where the rubber parts are attached (they don't detach).  The additional 4-1/4" length comes from the connector and spout.

The anchor hole at top of the tub will leak if there's not a tab in it.

Allow me to thank you for helping me with my machine. A little time spent at Lowes (I needed to return something anyway) yielded a length of clear plastic tubing, and a 90-degree piece of plastic electrical conduit.

I used a piece of PVC pipe that was laying around the garage to keep the clear hose stiff, (was going to use this before i bought the clear tube) allowing me to force it onto the end of the recirc pump. The end is a little darkened because I warmed it a little with a torch it re-form the I.D. at 1 1/8"

The friend who sold me the Calypso felt bad about it needing an oddball part, so he gave me this vintage machine to use as back-up, or if I couldn't get the Calypso working again...

Do you need a service manual?  What's the serial number of the machine?  It doesn't appear to be very old.
