New Haier HLP21N Portable Automatic Washer

I have loved washing machines since I was a teenager and worked at a used appliance store back in 1961-63 at age 12 to 14. I also owned my own small used appliance store in the late 1980's through 1991 and I repaired/reconditioned everything I sold. Now being just a bumbling old fool on social security and living in an apartment, I want something neat to play with. I have spent a lot of time researching little portlable washing machines and believe I want to get a Haier HLP21N. They are the cheapest fully automatic little washing machines available. Haier is the largest manufacturer of refrigerators and laundry equipment in the world today.
I do have a fabulous 1990 top line GE Filter-Flo and 1993 Kitchenaid dryer in the basement but I really want something to play with and think the little Haier can be fun. Lot's of videos of the Haier HLP21N on youtube and mostly good reviews at Amazon. Idiots overload it and ruin things getting it hooked up but I will only use it to entertain myself with light loads. And even a clear plastic lid to watch what goes on.

Randy, you should get one!  My mother has one in her little apartment so she doesn't have to haul her laundry down the hall to use the pay machines.  People can say what they will about it being made in China but mom's has been cranking out load after load for about 8 or 9 years without a problem.  And, it's a lot of fun to watch in action!

Haier pulsating washers

Most of the new Haier top loading washers do no have agitators. They are pulsating washers which frees up the tub area. Even the Haier full size washing machines use that except for two models that have regular agitators.
They have four raised ridges in the tub bottom and the tub rotates back and forth several turns. It is supposed to be gentler on fabrics than an agitator rubbing at force. Watching demo videos - there is a lot of turbulance generated by the four small ridges which really moves the items in the washer.
I wonder if this design will become more wide spread in new top loading washers ?

HLP-21

Wait until the planetary drive seizes You're in for a sweet sound (that thing in the middle) I've had 3 of these and only one still runs under light use. I will admit they are incredibly convenient for small areas, but if you're going to get one the 23e is a better unit all around. All of my small XQ and HLP series suffered from a failed planetary drive, on the 1st machine the drive began to seize and went on and took the motor. These are however neat little machines and can provide good results but as expected they do tangle and the narrow diameter spin basket doesn't extract terribly well.

Also, the main reason these machines has a pulsator is purely size. They aren't HE machines, it's just there is no physical room in the tub for an agitator. The full-size Haiers are clones and I don't believe Haier designed them. I think the full-size machines that have pulsators are HE machines.

Arriving Monday

The Haier I ordered through Amazon will arrive Monday according to UPS. I have a full size set in the basement so got the Haier to see what it is and to use for fun. Being the lowest cost fully automatic washer on the market - under $200 - I will study it's effectiveness. It is meant only for 6.6 pound loads or less. Some people report that the little Haier works fine for 6 years in weekly use and others report having problems much sooner. Haier customer service in the US is horrible. Most parts are availabe an priced cheap.
I hope to have alot of fun watching it run through it's clear plastic lid.

Machine arrived

I have the tiny little Haier washer now and am quite impressed. The inner tub is only 13 inches wide by 13 inches tall but it is not supposed to be a large capacity washer. It has three different automatic cycles plus four partial cycles to choose from. It is quiet and operates smoothly. A micro chip controls the machine operation and there are two different wash speeds incorporated in each wash cycle. Each spin incorporates 5 starts and stops with pumping before and after each. Quality is very decent for the price. The machine is advertised as having a 6.6 pound capacity but the operator manual states 3.9 pounds for a full load. There are 8 LED lights on the control panel and four touch buttons. The lid is clear plastic so you can watch what is happening while the machine works. There are four leveling legs plus four non leveling rollers which can be installed. There is a liquid dispenser for diluted bleach, low suds detergent or fabric softener.
The HE style non agitator operation really moves clothes so an agitator is not necessary and I am real amazed by it's action. So who needs an agitator.
So far I think it is a real neat little washer. Longevity will have to be proven.
