...endless loop music cartridges very popular in the 70s and a few years on either side of that decade :)- last new on i bought was Steve Miller band Abracadabra in 1982 :) Might have to play some old T-rex or Peter Frampton to celebrate. Several age related problems can occur with these ~ 40-55 year old tapes:pressure pads come off or crumble, foil splice tape that also completes circuit to switch tracks comes off.

I was a teenager during the 8-Track’s heyday. I remember how some albums had to be radically re-sequenced to fit the time constraints of the format. It really messed with the artist/producer’s intended flow for the album. Have fun celebrating 8-Track Day and as you can see by my choice of avatar, I’m all in on your suggestion to play some old T. Rex. 👍

Old T.Rex...

There is a song by the Who(from about '81 IIRC,Athena?) where T.Rex gets mention-also Mott the Hoople mentions T.Rex too-All the young dudes-a great song from '72 :)
Reply 2 -i know that sound well-along with the gentle purr-rattle of the cartridge spool nutating on it's spindle.

In the fall of ‘67 the Powerglide in my Mom’s ‘63 Impala crapped out and the car had almost 100,000 miles on it so she decided to trade it in. She wanted to buy a new Camaro, but my a-hole soon to be stepfather insisted that she get a “sensible” Volkswagen, which she did not want.

Well on a Wednesday afternoon she took I and my two siblings to the VW dealer in Santa Rosa, Calif. They had a new green ‘67 VW on the lot that was all tricked out with Mag wheels, a custom wood steering wheel, a special exhaust system and wonder of wonders an 8 Track Tape player. It cost $2600, which was over $600 more than the base model ‘67 VW. She absolutely wouldn’t consider a new ‘68 Bug because the those high headrests since being only 4’9” tall she couldn’t see over them.

Since Mom and Tony weren’t married yet she could make her own deal on the car and loan. So to spite him she bought the loaded ‘67 Bug, with the 8 track tape deck, which buy the way came with a couple of 8 track tapes, one of which was Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. OMG, she played that GD tape over and over again thinking the it was the coolest thing since Artie Shaw, God bless her.

Tony was pissed off that she spent $2600 on that Bug. And coincidentally, she coulda’ gotten a base ‘67 Camaro for the same amount. Tony learned not to tell Mom what to do after this because it was sure to backfire on him. Good Times LOL.

Herb Alpert...

I still listen to "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" nearly 40 years later. Loved that album since I was a kid.

Surprised your mother wanted a '67 Camaro after having children. I would have gone with a more sensible approach that had 4 doors and is comfortable, like an Impala or a station wagon. Everyone is different though.

Re:#5

My parents never owned a station wagon. We almost always had convertibles or 2 dr HT’s, the only 4 dr sedans we ever had were three different Jaguar 3.8 sedans, a ‘58, ‘59 and then a ‘60.,followed by a ‘61 Mercury Monterey Convertible , a 62 Studebaker Granturisimo Hawk, and then the ‘63 an Impala 2dr HT.

A ‘67 Camaro would have had a bit more room than a ‘67 Bug. But all of us fit into the Bug, and sometimes we would have one of our two Doberman’s with us too in the backseat. Both of my parents liked sporty cars, not family cars. Us kids thought it was fun always getting a new car.

I love 8 track tapes too!

First one I ever listened to was a recording of Elvis Presley’s ‘Aloha From Hawaii’ concert, preformed on Honolulu in 1973. I’ve still got that tape, and it’s my favorite out of all of them. Always love to hear the pronounced “KA-CHUNK” of the solenoid switching the tracks. I also like that the music is on a continuous loop, with no intervention required when it reaches the end, great for background music while working.
