Hi would anyone have advise on washing bed linen in a FL, I always end up with the pillow case's in a ball in the corners of the fitted sheet so I usually wash in 2 loads Duvet cover + 4 pillow cases and fitted sheet by its self but there must be a better way. I use a 5KG Miele washer and dryer and most linens are 1000 thread count cotton king size and load capacity is not an issue

In My Experience:

It seems to depend on the washing machine - some do this more than others.

For years, I had a direct-drive Whirlpool pair, and sheets were an ordeal, because they would be tangled into ropes that were very annoying to straighten out before putting the sheets into the dryer.

Since switching to vintage Maytag machines, I don't have the problem at all, and the linens come out much cleaner as well. I was never able to find a loading or other strategy that helped with the Whirlpool machine, and trust me, I tried.

Pre-Roll

I have had good luck pre-rolling sheets loosely into a jelly roll. Then load them into the machine so that the direction of the roll is perpendicular to the tumble action. They rarely tangle this way.

We have the Miele W4842 and the pillowcases, as well as any kitchen towels, often end up in the pocket corner of the fitted bottom sheet. I find this happens more, however, in the matching Miele dryer as everything tumbles. I'll often stop the dryer mid-cycle, check the corners of the sheet, and sort everything out before continuing the cycle.

My biggest complaint is that the hems of the pillowcases come out of the wash with an accordion pleat that really doesn't want to press out. As IF I have time to iron pillowcase hems. We never had that problem in our regular non HE top-load washers.

Personally I wash all the bedding together. Duvet covers, fitted sheets and pillow cases all go in 1 load (luckily my 13kg samsung top loader is big enough for a double, queen and king size extra length set in 1 load) and I don't have tangle issues. I always line dry linen but when I have tumble dried, I do pillow cases in 1 load and duvet covers and sheets in 1 load. The whirlpool heavy duty dryer sometimes tangles but I have dryer balls which do seem to help and I redistribute the load mid cycle. But I've never had issues with tangling or cleaning by washing 1 big load

I rarely have an issue....

I tend to load sheets as follows - I never just shove them in because the last thing I want is an unbalanced spin or poor result.

- Pillow slips

- Grab the flat on two corners and bring together, bunching material as you do
- fold in half and put in machine, fold first.

- Grab fitted sheet around the middle when held top to bottom
- fold in half and smooth the air out of it
- place fold first in the machine.

It doesn't matter which order things go in, I rarely get a pillow slip caught up.

In a Whirlpool DD washer it is important not to overfill the wash load. I found that I got tangle free sheets in our WP TL machine if I set the water to just over the tops of the sheets and still had roll over. One more notch higher and the sheets tangle.

I've been loading mine into toploaders almost like how you would load a Frigidaire Unimatic. Not totally balled up but never wrapped around the agitator. Then pillowcases on either side of each other to keep it balanced. They come out tangle free or if they are a little tangled, they aren't roped together and twisted up. Thicker blankets or comforters small enough to properly fit into a top loader are tricky though. I have yet to not have one tangled in itself. Anything bigger goes into a double or triple load front loader by its self. I'll grab it by the middle, lift and load folding in the rest of it. It turns over as it should for good wash action but never twists or tangles if there are sheets with it.
