6 way lamps?

On top of fans and appliances, I’ve developed a new interest, lamps.

In particular 6 way floor lamps. A six way lamp is actually a lamp having a 3 way socket in the center, surrounded by 3 other standard sockets. The 3 ways socket has its own knob, while the outer sockets are controlled by another switch, allowing one, two or all there to be lit at once, with or without the 3 way bulb.

I just think these lamps are extremely well designed and versatile.

Older versions typically had a glass diffuser bowl over the center socket, which was often a mogul sized socket to accommodate a 300 w 3 way bulb, with the shade sitting on this bowl. Newer models which are still made today use a typical harp mount shade with a medium based socket.

I also have acquired two old versions with a night light in the base!

Does anyone have these types of lamps?

Yes I have one of the old ones with a lighted base. Nice to use on a bare wood floor but I don't think the lighted base was meant to be used on carpeting which may be why that style fell out of favor.

To show off my “two-way” lamp socket from Mitsuboshi Japan. YES ITS SPELLED CORRECTLY

I picked it up off a old lamp from Goodwill as I had just wanted the socket (lampholder) as I thought it was extremely unique, I also found the fluorescent bulb in the same place, so I picked them up And purchased an extension from Home Depot, and The fluorescent bulb runs off of 60 Hz so I have a little 50 to 60 Hz converter just to make sure I don’t burn out the ballast, while the little night light bulb is actually a 240 V night light bulb, but I’ve put it in there because A It fits, B it’s not really all that bright C, it’ll last forever being underrun Kinda like that really really dim light bulb at the firehouse

I have one of the floor lamps with the mogul base socket in the center, surrounded by 3 standard base sockets. Unfortunately, it got knocked over several years ago, and one of the 3 arms holding a socket broke off. It broke right where the socket screws on, so I ended up removing the 2 other sockets, and their associated switch and wiring. The glass reflector bowl also broke, but my mom got a new one at a lamp store. I have thought about buying a new top assembly at a lamp parts place, but would have to paint the parts to match, and have never gotten around to it. The lamp has a square base, and is an unusual buff yellow color, with brass trim. It came from my grandfather that lived with us for several years. He and my dad's stepmother bought it sometime in the late 1930's.

We had another one when I was a kid, with a round base that had an insert of alabaster or some translucent stone, that had a light below. If I remember correctly, it had 2 sockets for C-9 base bulbs (like outside Christmas lights). My mom gave it to the church sale many years ago.

I've also seen floor lamps with a circline florescent lamp in addition to the center bulb. The ballast was in the base.

I have seen the flor lamps with circline fluorescents and the mogul socket in the center.

One of my lamps has a C9 socket in the base light, I haven’t looked inside the other to see.
