Past Sunday's paper had something in the coupon sections (but no coupons...) announcing Persil PROclean was now available at Shoprite. Fair enough...

What caught my eye (while searching for the not to be found coupons...) was this blurb in fine print:

"6x the Cleaning Power"

"Based on stain removal performance of 1 dose of Persil liquid vs. 6 doses of the leading liquid bargain brand variant in a standard top loading machine"

This got me wondering; is this Persil designed/tested only in American top loading washers? That could explain some of the issues a few of this lot seem to be having such as frothing and rinsing.

Talk among yourselves.

I thought "Six times the cleaning power" was Tide's big brag. Wonder if they're comparing it to products like Sun or Xtra?

Suds, suds, suds: I set the Maytag to dose Tide Turbo products at the correct setting of "2X / Soft Water" and experience very clear rinses. I have to set the machine to "3x / Soft Water" to avoid oversudsing with Persil Proclean 2 in 1; and even then it froths up quite a bit when using the Sanitize or PowerWash cycles with their long wash tumbles and boosted water temps.

Seems like Persil is too frothy even for top load washers. I used it once and had suds city going on. The second time I dialed the dose back and it was ok. The only other thing even close to sudsing like that is the box of non HE Gain powder that I've been using, and that's only too sudsy if I start the washer and put it in before throwing clothes in.

And if it was designed for and tested in American top load washers then why in the world is it advertised as HE?

Maybe it is to justify the 6x designation, which is in line with what Tide is doing with their detergent advertising. Perhaps it is 6x better at stain removal in a top load washer, but not 6x better in a front load washer. Not to say it does a better job of cleaning in a TL, but that low-end detergents clean better in a FL. My experience is that with the more concentrated wash solution in a front load washer, low-end detergents clean better than when diluted in the full tub of water in a traditional top loader.

The fragrance

I've read numerous complaints here and over on Gardenweb where people swear the liquid is a completely different scent than the original German version. I've used the original and honestly cannot smell a difference at all. And as far as sudsing goes, I do see more suds during the wash, but generally by the second rinse the water is rather clear. I should state that I never fill the cap beyond line 2 and we have medium water hardness of about 7 gpg. Same goes for the Perls; never beyond line 2. I do notice that the Perls being sold here dissolve much quicker than the original German version. Which is a blessing as the German version would always get stuck on the door boot and there'd a glob of undissolved Mega-perls waiting for me when the cycle was complete.

I've never had a problem with excessive suds, in top or front loading machines. Of course lightly soiled loads in a front loader will foam up, but it's always rinsed out well by the final rinse. In a traditional top loader, minimal suds unless washing a small load of lightly soiled laundry at high speeds. Always rinses out well. We have very hard water and never use more than line 2 for a heavily soiled load in a top loader. Always excellent cleaning in any washer. The scent of the original liquid is a bit strong but not unpleasant.

No sudsing issues with Walmart Persil Pearls in my top load Speed Queen, my water hardness is 1gpg. I actually like the stuff, even the scent which is gone after the rinse. The 2 in 1..I had some sudsing issues when I first used it but I'm sure I overdosed, since than I'm careful with dosing on load size and soil level. It rinses well for me and leaves just a mild clean scent, I also this this product. Cheryl

I had to take

my fiberfill comforter to the coin-op a few weeks ago, and I took my Persil 2 in 1 liquid with me, and in the Speed Queen "quad loader" I always use, the Persil performed BRILLIANTLY, even in a machine whose only modfier is wash temperature.

I'm sold on Persil!

Haven't tried Persil ProClean or any of the others yet.

I have been using Persil Universal Powder for about 4 years. Whether it's a TopLoader or the Miele, I have had nothing but Superior results.  No sudsing, great cleaning and clear rinsing. Nice scent...

Now that the restaurant is closing, I'll have get out and purchase this Persil and try a dose and see how it compares to Rosalie's and Universal Powder.

I've been using the Pro clean liquids and Perls since it's been released.  I also have a bottle of the German liquid and the stuff smells the same and suds the same.   For me the German Persil liquids are sudsy compared to the powder and the same is true with the Persil Pro...more suds in the wash with the liquid but in the first rinse the suds dissipate.

The detergent came out as top rated by CR - whatever that means, and they tested it at 75F.  This may mean that it is designed for cooler water temperatures since most machines sold in the USA today are using dumbed down temperatures, so when increasing water temperatures I will reduce the amount of detergent used.  One thing I wonder is if it was designed to be dosed like the German instructions - by soil level but the printed instructions are by the standard...use 1 line for normal loads...  I say this because I dose the Pro clean buy soil level and ignore the bottle instructions and get an almost clear rinse for the first rinse, and a clear rinse for the last.  I haven't used an extra rinse in the last two years and I don't need it when using the Pro clean either.

I use line zero if I don't see any visible soil on items and line 1 for heavier soil, and if my machine is not completely full(I cannot fit anymore into it) I use line zero.  No problems.

If I have a lot of visible soil and a completely full machine then I use line 1, so I think a little of this goes a long way.  My MO  is that if the machine will end up looking half full when the clothes are wet and I am using a temp above 120F  I don't need to use line 1 unless their is visible soil

So far no problems with suds or  poor rinsing but I dose by soil level  and load size and not by the directions because I don't know what a normal load is supposed to be.  One persons normal is another person's exception.

Dear

You mentioned taking a whiff of Persil at Rite Aide.
I wondered if you thought the scent was like the Persil I sent you a while back?
The Pearls from Walmart seem to have the same base notes scents as that Universal powder.. To me it dose?

"same scent as German/Henkel Persil color gel in my stas

@stan

No, the Persil PROclean liquid/gel has the same scent as the Persil for colors liquid/gel from Germany that one has a few bottles. That is why one made the above comment about "German/Henkel...".

Wrote about it at the time (scent of German Persil color gel) in a few threads.

FWIW the powder and megaperls versions of Persil do not leave a very noticeable lingering scent, at least not for laundry done in my Miele or Oko-Lavamat. OTHO the gels are far more tenacious in that regard.

I love the smell of Persil but Tony hates it.  But...he's started using the pods in our white loads because he says they don't bubble as much as Gain or Wisk in hot water.  Funny, I don't have problems with sudsing when I wash whites in Gain or Wisk...

@ Laundress

Sorry for the confusing question..
I've only had two experiences with Persil, and know nothing about the brand.
1st experience was the Universal powder I had ordered online a while back.. don't know if it was German, or British? I sent that to you, and I remember the overpowering scent it had AKA "that smell"
2nd experience was recently.. With the Persil Pro Clean Power Pearls from Walmart (original scent)
While the Power Pearls did a very nice cleaning job (in my Top Loader) I had some trouble with rinsing, and noticed the same diluted scent (base notes) as that Universal.

Came >this< close to fetching a bottle of ProClean liquid a few hours ago to test it for excess sudsing but WM here apparently no longer carries the 2-in-1 version.  Is the non-2-in-1 product also a potential oversudser?  I've had no issues in that regard with the powder.
