I currently have a top loading machine where the lid opens off to the side instead of front to back. When looking to replace this washer I have been unable to find a side opening top loader. Just curious, does this have a more official name or are these are no longer in production? I found a picture of the style I am talking about and added a link to it.

I would buy a more modern washer with the lid opening from front to back, but the former owners of my home did an interesting job with the shelving above the washer and dryer where the lid would bump into the shelf and will not stay open if I purchased a machine that opens front to back. I could pull the machine out from the wall more than usual, but my laundry room is too small. I could move the shelving up, but I don't want to drill and patch 8 holes in my wall to move two rows of shelving up if it's not necessary.

usually a side opening lid will open taller than a front to back design....

those DirectDrive Kenmores are still plentiful as used machines......

even if you found a front to back opening lid one, you could always flip the top, or whole cabinet to the base to make it fit your needs...

my brother had a front to back Kenmore with a cabinet above it, he made a flip down piece out of wood that hid under the cabinet to hold the lid open as needed....

Size

I think maybe the more unique thing about this washer (it's a Kenmore) is the height. It is 36" tall where most of the washers I've been looking at are 42"+

curious what sort of TL machine has a 43" tall cabinet?

give or take the adjustment of the leveling legs....

most standard TL machines, like you have pictured, are around 35 inches tall, that's just the cabinet, not including the control panel...

if you have cabinets to clear for the lid to open, you need to open the lid to its highest point and measure from there.....

for example....

Kenmore with rear opening lid......53"
Kenmore with side opening lid......51"
Frigidaire 1-18....................54"
Speed Queen ST.....................52"
Cabrio.............................58"

your other option is a FL....and possible to install a base to raise it to the bottom of the cabinets....either way, you wouldn't lose storage....

there are also a few HE TL machines that offer a lid that folds in half when open

a side note.....a strong hidden magnet tucked under the cabinet could also hold the lid open for you...
