A Little Help I Need a New Dishwasher

Does anyone have any suggestions on which brand of dishwasher to buy? My old Maytag which is about 20 years old is dying a slow, painful, LOUD death and needs to be replaced. My wife and I were at Best Buy and saw some Whirlpool models and some pricey Kitchen Aid models. We liked the Kenmore models the best at Sears. We cannot have the "tall tub" as our opening is not big enough and we want to spend around $400. I just want something DEPENDABLE!!!! I am tired of buying something that just lasts for a few years and then is junk. Is there something out there built to last AND wash dishes for this money? The salesman said that the Kenmore was the same as a Whirlpool. HELP! I was hoping to get one in black. Thanks for any ideas.

Tom, particularly since you're looking for a non-talltub model, go to Sears. They have one they often run for under 400 that has everything you need, and is made by Whirlpool. Make sure and get the one with the towerless lower rack. It is so much easier to load.

Correct me if I'm wrong, anybody, but tall tub machines are no bigger in size than normal models, right?

Since I've moved into my house, an early 80's Whirlpool was replaced by a 2004 Frigidaire (neither were tall tubs) and a new tall-tub Maytag in late 2005. All three machines fit in the same space.

The tall tub is accomplished not by making the machine itself bigger, but by allowing the tub to reach closer to the floor.

And I love my new Maytag tall-tub. Highly recommended!! Very quiet and huge capacity, especially for big items.

Correct, tall tubs are no larger than regular machines. I just replaced my Maytag Jetclean (about 15 years old) with a new LG and it fit perfectly in the existing opening. So far I can't say enought nice things about the LG.. quiet, cleans good, options etc....

True,the tall-tubs will fit,BUT the non tall-tub dishwashers by Whirlpool,including the Whirlpool-made Kenmores,with the towerless design that Scott talked about are superior in durability and lastability ,yet clean like a dream.

I'm curious to know if you don't mind my asking, about why you mentioned that a Taller-Tub Dishwasher wouldn't fit in your space? I've got a Maytag Taller-Tub 2-Rack Dishwasher, that I've had for almost 3-years now and it replaced a normal 2-panel Dishwasher, in fact through the years, it replaced about at least 4 to 6 Dishwashers, that were purchased through the years.

As far as I know, they are all pretty much the same size, being a standard Width and Height, to enable the newer Taller-Tub Models to fit the openings as well.

I'm very happy with my Maytag Taller-Tub 2-Rack Dishwasher and the performanence, as well as the placement of everything that goes into it for Washing.

I have had one Retro-Fit Repair on my Dishwasher, for a replacement Wiring Harness, due to a possibly fire hazard of the original Wiring Harness, but I've never had any problems otherwise with my Dishwasher. I {BTW} happened to buy my Taller-Tub when they and the 3-Rack Models came out originally and Maytag was including at no charge a 7-year Extended Warrantee, as a Bonus.

Hi Tom, It is great to see you posting here. Have you thought about looking for a vintage Kitchen Aid dishwasher to replace yours with. There are many of them out there and they sure are wonderful machines judging from the ones that I have used. Terry

Hi Terry! Yes, I have thought about something vintage...with the house and the other appliances I think something new is in order. I love those older Kitchen Aid machines and really like the new ones...they are just out of my price range at the moment. Thanks for all of your input. I feel that I can at least make an intelligent choice and not rely on what the salesman tells me is true...thanks again!

PS Terry I just love this site...the posts keep me reading for hours on end...and the pictures! Who would not love the vintage lamps, vacuums, etc!!!!

I've had great success

with my lower-midline GE dishwasher. Not the most deluxe one I've owned, but it cleans well, and is very, very quiet for a portable.

However, the February 2006 issue of Consumer Reports has the annual dishwasher report. They liked an Amanatag that went for around 400.

I don't know if you have a Sears Outlet nearby but the one near me has scads of major appliances, moreso than in any of the regular stores. Granted some are returns and some are scratch and dent etc but well worth a look.

Jim. I see you have the LG dishwasher. I am interested in this on also, since I have the LG washer and love it. I see you like the dishwasher. Are the cycles really long? Is the cleaning superior and also the drying? BTW, what model do you have?

Amana...

We got an Amana dishwasher last year (made by Maytag), and it is LOUD! When it runs, I constantly have the feeling that it is going to un-hook itself from underneath counter and run around the kitchen (same goes for the Amana range). I would not purchase an Amana dishwasher (or range) again.

My wife and I purchased a Whirlpool dw last year to replace a 25 y/o GE that was installed when the kitchen was remodeled by the previous owners. The feature that I like best on this Whirlpool is that it has a delay start time feature. This way you can set it to run during off peak electric usage hours. It really does save on the electric bill, believe it or not.

Bosch Dishwasher

I started out with Maytag...cleaned ok and was loud. Then went to Asko...cleaned ok, was quiet, but not reliable. Four years ago I bought a Bosch and I LOVE it! Cleans great, is reliable, and is so quiet that when you are in the kitchen all you hear is some water moving and if you leave the room can't hear it at all. Hope that helps.

My niece has a Sears Ultra Wash that she paid around $400. She is very happy with the machine. It is quiet, cleans very well and she likes the rack configuration. She says it holds quite a bit and has all the cycles most folks want. It has the Scrub cycles as well as the delay start.

I do have to say though that I ditto the comments on the Bosch. I really love mine. If you can swing a few hundred dollars more you probably won't have to replace it in a few years. It cleans very, very well.

I went from a poorly designed Frigidaire DW to a Bosch - and I'm very happy with the Bosch. Cleans well, is relatively quiet, and I got a scratch 'n dent for only $350.

Thanks for all of the input. We picked up and installed the dishwasher today. It was $299 at Sears and we chose the Kenmore model short tub without the "tower" to interfere with the lower rack. Upon removal of the old Maytag dishwasher, we saw that it was purchased in Feb. of 1993 so it was not as old as I thought. The new one is quieter and "sanitizes" the dishes better. It is not as quiet as I had hoped but it is an improvement. I am having trouble with a leak. It seems that the door is not sealed as well as it should be. There seems to be some sort of misalignment too of the catch as it is very hard to close and must be pushed down on to hear the "click". I like the touch pad and especially the lockout feature since I have a 13 month old in the house. Time will tell and I will continue to work on the leak problem. Thanks again for all of your advice.
