I thought this was interesting - it's a photo of the kitchen in the Castle of Mey, the private residence of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. It's now available for rent, at £50,000 for a week-end. You can't just put down your money and take up residence, either - you have to be invited, because it's still under Royal ownership. *

Anyway, a photo of the kitchen is below. The fridge is supposedly around 60 years old, which would date it from around the time the Queen Mother bought the castle when she was in mourning for her husband, King George VI. I like the homely bread bins and the collection of dishes and casseroles in the cabinets, as well as the overall air of no-nonsense efficiency.

If you'd like to see more, there's a link to a Daily Mail story below. It's fascinating to see things like Princess Margaret's old bedroom, which is not nearly so grand as you might think it would be - there's a very utilitarian washbasin sticking out of one wall.

Can any of our British members I.D. the fridge?

* Royal residences fall into two categories - ones owned by the nation, and ones owned by the Royal Family personally. Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle are examples of the former, with Sandringham, Balmoral and the Castle of Mey being examples of the latter. Whichever category a Royal residence falls into, it is expected to produce revenue these days, to offset operating costs. Tours and rentals are the norm now, where once these places were strictly off-limits to ordinary people. It seems a better system today than before; I like the idea that you and I can get a look at Royal life.

Aha!

So, the Queen Mum had a Frigidaire! Nice choice for reliability, as its record of service over six decades or more shows.

I do have to wonder why it's up on blocks. I've seen that at seaside houses before (Katharine Hepburn's fridge at her beloved Fenwick in Old Saybrook, CT was raised), but so far as I know, the Castle of Mey is not subject to flooding - it's supposedly a quarter-mile from shore.
