AEG LL1620 update

Ok so i got this machine like a month ago, have been completely happy with it, best machine i've had so far.
So this morning turned the machine on, started loading it everything fine then there was a bang drum illumination goes out, lcd goes out washer completely dead! And i was left with a lovely burning smell lol, contacted AEG and they have been pretty good sending someone out sameday. I reckon could be the PCB? not sure.

Mains Filter Capacitor

Hi jwilson00,
I am sorry to hear of your trouble. It could be the PCB but it's not likely in a machine so new.
I think it could be the mains filter capacitor. I have heard them go bang, they burst open, produce a burning smell and the machine goes totally dead.

ok so had the engineer out, have to order parts, he went on to ask me if i knew how many control boards or summit in the machine, i said i didnt know and he replied with it'd got four. Think he hated working on it cause he said it'd got too many electronics for its time lol, he said he couldnt find out which board had gone cause the power just stopped at the LCD display so was having to order all four boards plus i asked to put on order the drum lamp just in-case that had blown too.

But he was surprised that the boards or board had gone wrong so soon in a new machine.

Ask for a replacement machine

Hi jwilson00,
I'm sorry to hear of your machine needing such a comprehensive repair. If your machine is only weeks old I would suggest you press AEG Electrolux to replace the machine for you; that degree of component failure is unreasonable in such a new machine. At the very least they should give you a warranty extension.
You have nothing to lose by asking!

It came with a 5 year warrenty so its not so bad, and the service centre have been great, the parts came in on thursday so yesterday and their being fitted on the tuesday ( my next day off) so i cant really complain, it is a little disappointing that its gone wrong after two months but hopefully after the new parts are fitted it should last a little longer lol.

Glad you had a good feeling about Service Force.
A little story with not a good ending concerning them....
Zanussi ZDC5350 Condenser dryer, just out of warranty. During 1st 2 months, noticed a leak and intermittent squeak on drum. called SF out, then again, then again. Squeak still there....
on last visit, top of machine was not replaced correctly and the top now shows a gap to the right hand side (Where the LED display is located). SF were not interested at all and I would have had to miss another day at work for them to arrive. Please note the fixings are not normal screws but need a tiny spanner to remove and adjust. (Not something in everyones tool box)
During our last house move, the LED display cracked. I don't blame the movers but SF for the fact that they couldn't even replace something simple like the top of the cabinet or have any interest in putting it right!
As much as I love AEG Zanussi, I have a totally different opinion of Service Force...

sorry to hear bout that, the service force people here arent really service force but ferrers tech services. They have been very good, i got a time slot for them to come this morning, on the machine its had the entire LCD interface changed, new PCB control board and new drum light. total cost repair cost was £600.

You know that was one of the other problems I had on call out.... They made me feel as if I was asking the engineer to pay for the replacement of the interior bulb that went after 2 months!! Makes me feel as if my initial opinion of Service Force in Edinburgh was correct!!! Not portraying the right image that Zanussi/AEG/ etc would like from their back up engineers.
Shame on you, Service Force in Edinburgh/Glasgow!

I think i might of been lucky with the service force here in northants, i work in the hertfordshire area and when i rang service force from work the automated service must of put me through to a repair centre near there and the woman i spoke was a real nasty piece of work, i remember just pausing on the phone and not saying a word at the shock of customer service i recieved, and when she finally asked for my postcode she rudely said "why are you ringing this number, you need this number, gave it to me and put the phone down" absoultly appauling lol

The service here though was brill, i didnt really even know if the bulb had blown, but they still ordered and replaced it anyway just to make sure there wasnt going to be any wasted journey or waiting times.

Surge Protector

Hi jwilson00,
I'm glad your machine is sorted now, wow £600 for the repair thank goodness it was under warranty. It might be worth purchasing a surge protector for your machine, modern electronics are very vulnerable to dirty mains supply and of course lightening strikes. I always use a surge protector on my washers.

Thats probably a good idea, i love that machine to pieces , i dunno why the parts were do expensive, although that is the price on the bill being invoiced to electrolux, most expensive part was the LCD panel at £449, i checked on the AEG site for the same part and they sell it for £569 so its really difficult to tell what is the cost price to them, since i would of thought that if the repair cost them £600 they would of just replaced the machine since i only paid £689 for it lol.

Hi Jay,
I like your AEG it's a very handsome machine indeed and I'm sure it will give you many years of washing pleasure.
Yes I will post pictures as soon as the Electrolux arrives; I was quoted 2-3 weeks and its 2 weeks this Friday since I placed my order so hopefully not much longer to wait. I went for the white model as my discolouration issue with the Aqualtis made me a little cautious of the silver.

You've actually got slightly more risk of this kind of thing in the UK than we do in the rest of Europe.

Britain (Not including Northern Ireland) had a 240V supply system
Northern Ireland used 230V

The rest of Europe, including the Republic of Ireland, used 220V.

They've re-classified all of these supplies as 230V within the EU now. However, in reality they're still 220V and 240V (Except NI, where it's genuinely 230V)

The same problem would occur with appliances rated 220-240V (older ones). Spikes are outside the acceptable range, it's just that because your voltage is likely to be higher, a fluctuation upwards is more likely to cause damage than a 220V system will.

Appliances are now all rated 230V and are supposed to be able to cope with a range of voltages of about 230V +/- 10%. The problem (for UK customers) is that spikes at the upper end of a 240V supply can blow electronic components that are really only designed to cope with a spike on a 220V supply.

E.g. if you've a UK supply that's perhaps at the upper end of the British voltage limits e.g. maybe supplying at 249V, a spike will cause serious damage to some sensitive equipment.

I've checked our voltage here in Cork and it sits between 217-233V
Checked a supply in London and it was sitting between 238V-250V !!
It's quite a substantial difference.

From what I gather, the UK is reducing the voltage towards 230V as transformers are naturally replaced, but, in many areas you're still getting 240-250V.
