Although popularly connected to washing machines, the Bendix Corporation itself never actually manufactured that home appliance. In 1936 the company licensed its name to Bendix Home Appliances, another South Bend company, for a 25% stake in the company.[2] Bendix Home Appliances, founded by Judson Sayre, was later sold to Avco Manufacturing Corporation.[3]

Keith,

the american made Bendix frontloaders were imported in Germany till late fifties.

In 1958 Philco USA opened a subsidiary co in Italy : Philco Italiana. Since then, no matter of Bendix or Philco badged, these frontloaders were no more imported from the USA. They are those good old ones with the square door we've even seen printed on old "Which?" scans

In 1972 Ford (not GM yet) sold Philco to Bosch ( that was merged into BSH Bosch Siemens Household-appliances in 1967). Not a case the Bosch V 436 is a Philco-Bendix square door machine.

In mid eighties Philco Italiana had troubles, so BSH sold it to Vittorio Merloni in 1987. That's why the machine you mentioned looks like a early 90 Indesit.

In 2003 Philco Italiana corporate was closed and merged into antoniomerloni.it company , yet the plant in Bergamo-Brembate di Sotto still produced somewhat 780,000 frontloaders per year, mostly to be exported and rebadged with local brands
