That was Robert - sneaking in on my computer, don't listen to him!! The website is up and running as normal, however, we might have some higher than normal traffic as we had local news coverage tonight on the 10 o'clock news... The link is to the WOWT website which will just link you back to automaticwasher.org. The news story was recorded and we'll post it next week so everyone can see it.

Watch for more pictures of the new AMAZING finds we had today at an estate sale!!!

Wow!!!!

First a Maytag combo and now a Westy Wash-N-Dry!!!!

I can't believe that one of you was able to find this wonderful and incredibly rare machine. How awesome! And, in mint condition too!

What? Who? How? Details, details, details! Inquiring minds want to know!

I hope that it gives its new owner years and years of washing and drying pleasure!

Wash & Dry

So is this a combo machine? I thought Westnghouse only tried once inteh 60's to make a combo and it had problems like the Maytag combo and was recalled.

We left before this was posted so I was definitely surprised

And when I walked in the garage and saw it, I thought it was another slant-front Laundromat until I saw the "Wash-N-Dry"...I was amazed! And when Greg told me that it worked, I was nearly knocked off my feet! YAY for rare combos!

In action it was a great machine to watch, certainly different than the '49 Laundromat, and because of the deep tub you could run it with the door open somewhat, although it was still splashy! The super-fast 180-181 RPM spin was interesting as well! ( ;-) ) Not to mention the tub looked bigger than most of the FLs I saw at the 'Mart!

Definitely the find of the year! Great job Greg (and Terry for letting you know)!!

such a slow spin seems almost a sin

Why did most combos, with the exception of the Duomatic with its 505 RPM spin, have such SLOW spin speeds like 180 and 225 ?Not that 505 is super fast ,but at least that is near the average TL's speed.Just curious. That Wash-n-Dry is sure purty though.

Combo suspension

{assuming I have this correct}

Bendix had a patent on the suspension system for their combo. No other manufacturer could use that method, and thusly all other combos had to limit spin speeds due to suspension issues, until Whirlpool later came up with the very complex water-balance system. The limitation came into play only on combos, not on frontloaders that were only washers.

The Westy combo's tub/basket moved ONLY horizontally, no vertical or diagonal movement. IIRC, the tub on Westy frontloaders dropped down a bit during fill from the water's weight, and the boot deformed/wrinkled slightly. The combo did not do that. The front panel flexed very slightly with the side-to-side movement during spin. Also fun, it filled from between the inner basket and outer tub. There was no obvious stream of incoming water during fill, the water level slowly rose up through the perfs as it tumbled.

Quote: perhaps an illusion but it appears like there is a clear plastic shield behind the tub ring but in front of the drum? Or is it water???

I believe that was a piece of enamelled metal acting as a "lip" squaring off the opening. Perhaps it was to keep the weater in when the door was opened.

Stainfighter, that's the angled front of the inner tub. The combo is built like a Westy dryer. Someone described the combo as a dryer that washes. An air vent is there at the front of the tub for the airflow during drying, and the heating element is down in there. The duct is sealed during washing/rinsing. That was the major source of failure, when the gasket leaked and water got in and rusted the heating element. I recall someone said Greg used a Kirby belt as replacement gasket/seal.

LOL I stand corrected. Scariest thing when one opens his mouth and non-sense comes out. I actually saw that one and had my hand on the warm-air inlet as it was --sarcastic tone--cranking very much wanted heat into the garage..!

Let's try this little factoid. The machine IIRC does not have a connection to be able to use a 4" (or even a 3") vent pipe. There are two oval openings on the rear of the control panel that somewhat look like the oven vent on a vintage gas stove.

(I MUST convince myself that I can still remember details....LOL)

Westy Wash & Dry

So when was this model produced and for how long? And I assume this is NOT the model that came out later and was recalled like the Maytag combos?

What a machine this was!

This was a great machine, and lots of fun to watch in action! Splash splash splash! Very quiet,if the door was shut, but look out if it was open! Major washing drama. And it was in very good condition too. The catch of the day indeed!
