NEW YORK - Shares of Blockbuster Inc. sank 30 percent Wednesday after the video rental chain warned that it may have to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Competition from DVD-by-mail company Netflix Inc. and DVD vending machines operated by Coinstar Inc. have eroded the Dallas company's revenue even as it staggers under a heavy debt load.

Isn't Blockbuster the chain that was editing their videos for content and otherwise not offering material as originally presented? I've never used a video rental store, but if I did, I would have avoided Blockbuster for that reason.

We started up with Netflix for DVD's quite some time ago and I'm very satisfied with them, plus they're a local company I'm glad to support. I like the Netflix time off policy for their management employees. They simply don't keep track of it. As long as you're getting your job done, everybody's happy.

Isn't Blockbuster the chain that was editing their video

I know Hollywood Video here was cited for that. They were editing the trailers on the beginning of the tapes and replacing them with paid local advertising.

I know they got in trouble, because I was running the National Video across the street when the Feds came down on them for editing copyrighted materials.

When Blockbuster/Major Video first came on the scene back in the early 90's they were owned by an oil company out of Dallas and their sole and only purpose was to lose money for the company. Looks like they succeeded.

Blockbuster and Hollywood Video are closing down here. Haven't rented a movie in 5+ years. Haven't gone to a movie theater in over 8 years. Yep, neither have made any $$ off of me with their grossly inflated prices!

Dan, that's because you've been spending waaaaay too

No need to duck and run as one can't argue with the truth ;)

All the Hollywoods here closed a few years ago. Most of them have been torn down and made into Walgreens. I haven't rented movies in a long time, the movies I like (50's Science Fiction and old Horror) are in the $5 bin at Walmart. Why rent, when you can own?
