Cleaned up the dispenser yesterday on my sister's Kenmore/LG French-door.

2009/2010 model.

"Before" pic.  Didn't take one after.

The rural subdivision has a "private" community water system.  I don't know what treatment is done, if any, but it's apparently not much.  The kitchen faucet is GNASTY.  She said she soaks it in vinegar for hours to clean it and it gets bad again within a few weeks.

WTH?

I know some bacteria is good - but that can't be good. How does it grow in the ice dispenser? I've heard of commercial ice bin's needing cleaned.

Not that kind of bacteria

is good.
I had a friend who was a county health inspector. He told me that restaurant ice machines were notorious for being filthy. He used to test the ice to find out. They need periodic cleaning. Dust somehow make it's way into the ice making chambers.

You now that game show Cash Cab? I couldn't believe anyone could be this unknowledgable, but one $100 question was "what is the type of beneficial bacteria is made in the stomach"? Two answered E-coli. That can kill you.
The correct answer was pro-biotic. When hospital patients don't have enough, they can get C-dif, and it's highly contageous to sickly people.
