As you may know from my thread in the modern column, we recently gave up the nasty habit of washing dishes by hand and became a modern dishwasher home. I'm still floating on air about that!

On of the things that I really regretted leaving on the mainland was my Spartan Press-O-Matic, which is a flat press for ironing. I really hate ironing with a hand iron, and I never got the hang of using a roller type mangle.

So the other day Dennis and I stopped in at the Salvation Army and I found a Singer Steam Press, much like the old Spartan. Yay! Now I can really keep our clothes looking neat! I really love flat presses like this and wonder why they aren't more popular-they make so much sense!

My mother used to make her own dresses for formal occassions such as weddings and bar mitzvahs. She used to work with such materials as silk, satin, etc. Some of the fabrics that she used as had very fancy beadwork, etc. She used to use a pressing cloth and the iron's lowest temperature. (Even if the fabric's decorations couldn'b be ironed, the dresses' seams had to be pressed flat.) She once explained that the pressing cloth not only help prevent shine (as package also claims) but that it further reduced the iron's heat and thus further protected the fabric and/or it's decorations.
