Hi guys,
About time I posted about this one! On Thursday past I took delivery of a twin tub. All I knew about it was that it had a silver control panel and that it was a Hotpoint, it was free so I decided why not.
So a van pulls up and out comes the twin tub, it is a 1464 Supermatic, basically the Best Buy variant of the 14770 but with 1467 lids and dials. Felling very pleased I took the back panel off and noticed that it was fairly clean inside apart from the usually cobwebs. However there were tell tale signs of a leak from the wash tub. Upon checking the tub however there was hardly a spot of rust to be seen, no worse than my 9410 anyway. The agitator drive claw did look fairly corroded and I think I knew what the problem was. Before I sorted that out but I decided it would be best to see if it actually worked so in goes the plug and I was very happy to see everything worked as it should.
So the cork washer had rotted away under the special nut, off comes the nut, in goes a rubber washer and after a good layer of instant gasket the leak was stopped. At this stage I thought the work was all done but upon inspecting the spinner (clutch, bellows etc.) I noticed that the bellows had perished ever so slightly in a spot.
This got me fairly worried but I decided to put the instant gasket to the test and smothered the entire bellows with a layer of the stuff. I left it to dry over night and that gave me time to sort out another problem with her. The rubber drain hose had a crack in one place so I cut the bad section and rejoined it with a small plastic tube, the repair looks seamless so I'm well happy.
That brings us to today (am I boring you yet?), filled the spinner up with boiling water and left it for an hour with newspaper underneath. I waited anxiously and I was very proud to find the newspaper dry as if it came hot off the press! Instant gasket is now a product I swear by! Hopefully I can get a wash gathered up tomorrow. There is a few niggles though, the flow of water from the spin pump is restricted very slightly due to the plastic joint but it still drains fairly normally and due to the delicate nature of the repair to the bellows I will have to be careful when using the spinner. I am christening her "Nora" after "Nora Batty" from "Last Of Summer's Wine" because the charcoal lids remind me of her cardigan and after the battle I have had repairing this machine she has become a bit of a battleaxe just like Nora LOL!
