You are so sweet - I'd love it. BUT I am flying back to the 'States tomorrow and just don't have anyplace to put it...and nobody in my family appreciates what a beautiful vintage machine this is.
Damn, I sure hope somebody here can take her.

Just like the harvest gold one I used to have but probably newer or somehow more deluxe as mine didn't have the light above the dial. There has GOT to be somebody in Denver who appreciates this machine.

Ralph:

I think the ones with the "pilot light" are actually OLDER than the mid-to-late 1970s ones most of us are familiar with. The lights appear to be a nice detail that was cut out later in the run of this Maytag generation.

Am I wrong here?

That looks like an A206 from the early-70's. Yes, it would have a black Power-Fin provided the original agitator is still in it.

I should mention that I service foreclosure properties for a living - washers and dryers are constantly coming my way - but most are junk. This is the first keeper I've found. There is another CD Maytag in a property I expect to be doing in the near future, but it obviously has problems as the console is opened up.
I await the day I go into a basement and find a real Holy Grail :~)

The final generation of center dial Maytags, the 08 models, did away with the pilot light above the timer dial, and the TOL model no longer had the metal trim strip on the front. I learned that from Roger.

Sometime in the early 70s as near as I can figure, they went to a silent advancing timer as opposed to the snapping timers of yore.

Hi everyone I just signed up after months of just visiting. This is the exact Maytag I had growing up minus the pilot light. We had it from September 20th 1972, (it replaced a 64 Hotpoint) all the way to August 17th 1999 (replaced by a 99 DD Kenmore). It still worked, but it had an oil leak, as well as a water leak. In addition, it was becoming more and more in need of a pump replacement, and I could tell by listening to it that the motor and/or transmission was just about on its last legs. It was when it started leaking water that my parents decided it was time for it to give up the ghost. It had the grayish standard cap tub, as well as the black agitator with turquoise filter and dispenser cup. It was the ultimate work horse, as it washed 2 loads every day for a family of 6 including my parents.

It had been mentioned before that the belts on Maytags were very durable. I can attest to that. When my father and I diconnected the machine, we took a look under it. The belts looked as good as new.

Got it home. Man - these Maytags are heavy! It is an A-206
Not a dent on it - only minor surface blemishes on one side.
How does one renew the button lettering? Warm button is about worn off.

Yep, interior is just like ours was. And yes they are heavy. When the guys that delivered our Kenmore were hauling the Maytag out to the curb, they could not believe how much heavier it was then the washer they brought in. I don't know the weight, but it must have been close to 100 pounds heavier.

As far as the lettering on the buttons goes I have no idea how to renew it. Maybe you could get a replacement button from a parts dealer. I know that when we replaced the timer which failed in the washer's 22nd year of existence, we were also able to get a new timer dial, since by this time the decals had completely worn off. Of course I am assuming that the timer, and dial are separate components.

Use her in good health. If she needs fixing, just make the repairs, and she will work for you without any problem

Good Luck,
James.

Agreed, when I had that same model I was able to get replacement buttons. It might not be as easy to locate them now, as it was probably a good 15 or more years ago when I replaced the temp and load size buttons on mine. Looks like somebody already replaced the load size buttons on your machine. Seems the speed buttons didn't get a lot of use on these machines, as witnessed by your photo at the top of this thread.

I hope you find someone who wants to give this worthy machine the good home it deserves.

Truth is - the more I look at it - the more I think I'll clean her up and use her in the garage laundry I'd like to make for my work towels etc.
When I posted a question about the best machine for the job the A206 was the winner.
My only reason for not doing that would be to rework a Neptune Stack out of what I have on hand to save space.

But the Maytag sure is sweet and brings back memories of my Mom to boot :~)

You Won't Regret It

Peter:

That really is a fantastic machine for the purpose; I think you're doing the right thing. I can tell you that in the few weeks I've had an A108 washer, my clothes have become cleaner and brighter than they were when I was washing in a DD Whirly.

And when I use it, it's nice to feel solid metal, instead of tin and plastic. It's just a whole different experience than today's washers.

that looks just like my maytag a408 that we just fixed..it's a great machine, and thanks to the messages on here, i got mine back running better than ever..hang on to it if you can
