That's a Philco Predicta, the Holiday model. Predictas were produced between 1958 and 1960 (with I think a little carryover to 1961), in several different table-top and console models. They are now reproduced by a company called Telstar, with modern chassis and picture tubes. Vintage Predictas can fetch a lot of money, but restoration is expensive, and the design of vintage units' electronics was not the greatest, so there can be problems even with restored units. Here's a link to the Telstar site:

Yes, even among collectors with the expertise to restore Predicta sets, they remain problematic due to the design of their circuitry and cramming it all into that small chassis. The free-standing picture tube is the least of the worries with these sets. They are fabulous, though. The "barber pole" models always scare me. They look sooooo top-heavy. Not the Predicta to own if you're in earthquake country.

They were indeed unreliable...

But nothing looks cooler with some mid century mod space age decor than a predicta. I have several of them - they are like sculptures that light up!
Philco had a great space age design team back in the day - (for the artistic part of the design anyway. Everything from their fridges and washers to radios and TVs looked like it was a from the Jetsons.

Top Heavy?

I have a pedestal Predicta,it really isnt as top heavy as it appears, but its appearance is beautiful, but needs caps replaced.Tooo! Much heat build up,a small fan probably would do the job. The picture tubes were only ok. On the other hand I have a 1956 Motorola with a beautiful sharp and bright pic, orignal pic tube with electric tuning, good sets, Bobby

Actually...

according to one restorer I knew...the 19 inch picutre tube models were fairly reliable..it was the 21 inch models that sunk Philco. The reason for this was because the picture tube was sealed in its own compartment with NO VENT HOLES to let the air in.......The restorer also told me that when Philco went bankrupt they had a number of unsold Predicta's left over and that they were sold to Holiday Inn and Howard Johnson Motels at a very good price......PAT COFFEY

I have read on vintage TV forums that people have indeed rigged up cooling fans for their Predictas after a re-cap and seem to get good results.

Thanks for all the feedback. My friend noticed this TV a while back online and was interested in trying to get one. I had no idea where to even start, then I remembered all the wonderful knowledge contained in this group. This will definitely help in the search for an old one or possibly getting a modern one.
