I just found a cache of 5 GE monitor tops, all in bad condition and mostly suitable for parts. The owner wants them out soon and is willing to part out machines. If anyone needs parts for a machine, email me and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks,
Chris

It was an impressive collection before they were left outdoors for years on end. One machine I think is salvagable, two are good for parts, and two are marginably salvagable.

How would one recover the refrigerant in those units? I don't think there is recovery equipment for sulfur dioxide refrigerant. Or did these units use R12?

Four of them are SO2, one of them is Methyl formate. I suppose you could harvest SO2, but you'd need a gas cylinder, the appropriate fittings, and the funky gas valve. Its doable, but I don't have the parts for it yet. :)

I would think you might get in trouble with the EPA if any of those are released but does anyone else here know if SO2 can be recovered? It would require its own recovery unit! I have not heard of Methyl formate.

Refrigerants...

You can recover SO2 if you are man enough to move the darn fridges. I guess the EPA won't get involved if you don't call them and tell them what you're doing.

Methyl Formate was used in the CA series of Monitor Tops in 1933 and part of 1934 I believe.

Here's a sad one...

This was a running 1928-1930 DR3 series Monitor top. Its probably a '28 because of the early early evaporators. A gas line was breached, and its sat outide for years. I'll probably end up saving just the hardware from it.
