Aqualtis AQGD169S Update

Hi Folks,
A bit of news on the Aqualtis AQGD169S.
I have identified a problem that could involve thousands of machines. Thankfully its not a safety or mechanical issue but a cosmetic one.
I noticed the paintwork on the front panel of my machine had darkened and discoloured on the lower front panel; this is where the sticker with Hotpoints product registration telephone number is attached. Well it appears that the adhesive used on this temporary sticker has reacted with the new silver paint. To cut a long story short Hotpoint replaced my machine but unfortunately the replacement machine has the same discolouration. Any members working in Appliance stores should investigate this issue ASAP as I believe this is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Please not this only effects the silver model AQGD169S there are no issues with the white models.

I am returning the Aqualtis and going for the new Electrolux Insight EWN14991W but unfortunately I will have to wait three weeks for delivery as Electrolux are currently out of stock; I hope it is as quiet as the Aqualtis and rinses as well. I went for the Electrolux as my sister has the older model and so far its proving to be a great machine. I will report on the Electrolux when it arrives.

I have an Aqualtis and touch wood no discolouration yet, althought the pump is cheap and can be noisy.

Good luck on the machine above, I was considering this too so it will be interesting to hear what they are like.

Hi Rob,
What colour is your Aqualtis? If yours is a white model you will not have any problem. My one is the new 8Kg AQGD169S which is silver and the silver paint has discoloured due to a reaction with the adhesive. I'm rather disappointed as I really like the machine.
I'm not sure if Hotpoint have changed the pumps in the Aqualtis but my one is not noisy at all

I know Electrolux make a good machine so I thought why not and I always liked the Direct Spray (JetSystem+) wash system.

Apparently Electrolux Group are following certain other manufacturers now, in that according to another forum, the tub/drum assembly is now a sealed unit. Should the drum bearings go faulty, the whole machine gets ditched.

Hi Rolls-rapide,
I will check that one out when my new toy arrives.
As for bearing replacement, I always replace the spider when I do bearings otherwise the new bearings will fail prematurely. On the older true Hoovers and true Servis machines one could change the carbon seal on the spider meaning both sealing surfaces were new. Unfortunately carbon seals are not used on modern machines, as the shaft is usually damaged when the bearings fail so the whole spider must be replaced to do the job properly. Replacing the entire tub unit would be an easier repair with reduced labour costs which might offset the cost of the tub unit. I will have to check the pricing of tub units before I can answer that correctly.

Here some information about electrolux from Germany:

They own AEG and there were big strikes here because they wanted to close the AEG-factory in Nuremberg/Germany. They finally did it. That leaded to the fact that the people refused to buy the machines so that the sales went bad. Further the "Stiftung Warentest" (a German consumer magazine, which tests all kind of products)did not take an AEG machine for the actual washing machine test because of the past happenings. Well, and in Germany AEG AND Electrolux spiral downward concerning the quality. In most cases the machine breaks down just after the warranty has expired (funny but true). And the customer service of AEG-Electrolux was rated last of all customer services. They offered too bad service.

Sorry, if I made too many mistakes, but some issues are quite difficult to explain, when German is your first language ;-)

Firstly you do not need to apologise for any mistakes your English is good.

I'm sorry to hear about Electrolux closing the AEG factory but It does not surprise me at all. In the 1980s Electrolux Group purchased Zanussi and later the Tricity and Bendix names from Thorn EMI. The purchase of Zanussi included the Zanussi factory where all AEG, Electrolux, Tricity Bendix and Zanussi washers are now produced. It makes good business sense for any company to consolidate its manufacturing and that's exactly what Electrolux Group did.
I am an appliance engineer and I personally find Electrolux Group washers are good solid machines. My sister has the older Electrolux Insight EWF14108W, she has had it about 18 months now and so far its proving to be a great machine providing excellent wash performance and very quiet even during top spin.

As for my new Electrolux Insight EWN14991W I'm still waiting for it to be delivered, I will report on it when I receive it but I feel positive it will prove to be a good machine.

Hey David,

I hope that your machine will work great und for a long time. Maybe you are lucky and the Insight-series is a good one. I only explained the situation here in Germany and it is very sad to see that a former top brand like AEG is drowning more and more because E-Lux has a hard policy of economic measures. Well, the Elux machines are not so common in Germany. For sure, you find them in the stores but not so often like Bosch or Siemens or Miele. We also have a washer-forum in Germany where we discuss such things and about appliances in general. But no user has an E-Lux machine so I can't really tell you about their quality. But if you have the impression that their washers are well made, so that is okay. Maybe the machines for the US market have a better quality than the ones for the European market, I don't know. I hope your machine arrives soon, so that you can tell us how it works ;-)

Just to clarify something

Zanussi has never been part of Thorn EMI, a UK electrical / electronics company.

Zanussi was an independent company until 1984 when it was acquired completely by the Electrolux Group. (Zanussi also owned the Zoppas company)

In 2003, Electrolux decided to build a 'master-brand' i.e. they're now identifying themselves on all of their sub-brands. This started as a foot note in the back of the instruction manual, and has has now gone to full co-branding.

It's also basically merged all of its European appliance operations into one business unit. This is why you're seeing similar designs, shared manufacturing facilities etc.

AEG's appliance division was acquired and the AEG brand is used under license from AEG. That company is enormous and mainly focused on power, transport and major industrial systems. Their appliance division was quite small and not really a very significant part of the AEG company, even if it is well known in parts of Europe.

I'm at home this afternoon patiently wating for my new Electrolux Insight EWN14991W to be delivered.

Installed

Hi Mark,
I have it installed but I don't have a full load of laundry till tomorrow
It frightened the life out of me by playing a loud musical jingle after I confirmed the language selection LOL; it plays this jingle each time it's switched on.
I will take some pictures after dinner. The door really stands out on this machine more so than my Dysons.
I was delighted to see that the tub unit is not welded on this machine.
