We've got a very small (14 sqft) 40 year old Kenmore (WP built) refrigerator/freezer in a condo we own. It was provided at the time the condo was built (as was the stove which is also in place). Looks like the fan was replaced about 20 years ago, but am noticing that the defrost timer is scraping a bit (sounds like a dying electric clock).

Are they universal, or am I going to have to try to find one?

The refrigerator juuuuuust fits in it's niche and is almond (so matches the stove and cabinets). We've got the place up for sale, so I'm loath to "upset the apple cart" to replace the fridge.

Jamie, you'll probably have to remove the timer motor and check its specs, the part/model number and RPM in particular, and then launch a search for a replacement.  I don't think it should be that hard to find one even in this annoying digital age.
