Perhaps because of the cold spring here, I was a little slow to bring out my summer straws. I usually keep half a dozen dress felts at the ready during the winter and only now retrieved the straws (and a lighter felt teardrop Fedora). I have a boater, a Charleston and a pork pie, but my light brown Milan teardrop was missing. My wife reminded me that I had given it away to a gentleman who looked great in it. So I ordered a Danville to replace it.

Around the turn of the century straws were forcably removed after a spedified date in some cities and destroyed (by roving ruffians) and in some cases the removal was so aggressive an operation that city crews had to scoop the carcasses from the street.

Hatless Jack

Oh yes, the source of my straw destruction anecdote is the book "Hatless Jack: the President, the Fedora, and the History of American Style"
