A Vacuumland user asked how one can upload their photos to aw.org or vacuumland while using an iPad or iPhone. I thought I would make a post on aw as well about this.

Unfortunately Apple's free browser (safari) blocks all photo uploads from their mobile devices. The only way is for website developers to spend months writing and debugging special apps for their sites, then pay Apple $99 for a developers license, upload it to their App Store and pray (or in my case cast a spell) that they accept it.

There is a much better iPhone / iPad browser and it allows all file photo uploads right from your phone's Camera Roll just like on a PC or Mac. It's called iCab Mobile Browser and it's available from the App Store. Unfortunately its $1.99 so its not free, but I've been using it and I like it so far.

ps. No other popular mobile phone has this issue, Droid/Blackberry, etc. Their free generic browsers has all upload features without having to pay an extra amount. Don't get me started with Apple on this subject. I am both a Windows and Mac (I have both a MacBook and Sony Vaio Laptop) user and I find both devices to be about equal with positive and negative points. In the end as a programmer though I do prefer a windows computer, but that is just me.

Ah that makes sense now. I have been browsing the site with the iPad 2 and not had any issues yet. One thing I noticed is that when I scroll down on the side it might flag a post as offensive when one doesn't mean to. But other than that one thing no problems here.

iCab? That's a name I haven't heard in years. I'll give it a shot. There have been many times I wish I could upload right from the iPhone, and instead manually move it to the Mac to post to the board. Thanks for the suggestion Robert.

iCab

It's an old name for sure. I used to use it as a browser for my old 68k Performa 637CD because by 2002, Apple and other software developers had long abandoned the idea of surfing the web on a 33mhz 68LC040. It was a great alternative and I have used it since for my iMac G3's that still run OS 9 as IE 5 just doesn't cut it. By the way, it's amazing how well a 33mhz machine can actually browse the net with a well written piece of software, the people that developed iCab seem to actually care about what they do.
