Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

When I first met my friend Jay (1997), the condo building laundry had Hotpoint equipment in Avocado. The complex was constructed as apartments in 1972, and all appliances were supplied by Hotpoint. Soon after they were replaced with Whirlpool washers and dryers.

There was a coin laundry in Peachtree Hills in the early 70s that had solid tub Hotpoints and Speed Queens. One night a friend took laundry up there and layered fabrics and detergent in the Hotpoints, sort of like lasagna and when he took them out the detergent was in undissolved bands throughout the loads. I wonder if a SQ would have done any better. I think it might have.

Not sure if the ones in Jay's complex were the original machines or not. That could only be possible if the commercial Hotpoint machines were changed to the GE design earlier than the home models, which occurred in '74.

The one shown is the shaded Avocado, so is earlier than '77. I think the one at the condos was also shaded, but not certain.

Did the early GE based Hotpoint commercial washers have the side opening lid like the home models, or did they always have rear opening GE type?
