I was lucky enough to find this gorgeous self-cleaning P*7 electric range for my friends Jan and Rick who have been working a 1967 Hotpoint double-oven range to its inevitable death (they were down to one working burner and only the smaller oven functioned for baking, not broiling). I told them that if they didn't act on this they had two choices:

Buy an overpriced piece of junk that seems to be the only 40" model stove on the market and now costs more than $2000.00

Remodel their kitchen.

They chose to accept this range which was in great condition for its age but when you look at the pictures, you'll see that the main oven is missing a rack and the stove's rating plate has a very unfamiliar model number that I've never seen for this kind of GE stove. Usually the model number for this kind of stove looks like: "JP 408 L HG" or something like that.

Since this basic model was offered by GE for about 10 years, I'm thinking that a model number from a similar self-cleaning model might yield a replacement rack that I can buy for them. ANY HELP AND/OR LEADS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

BTW, I found the accessory Sensi-Temp griddle for the stove on eBay. Searches for the rack weren't as successful.

Ken,

I'm guessing that this range was manufactured in August of 1976, based on the "RZ" serial number. Neither my 1976 nor my 1977 catalog includes any 40" models, but my 1978 catalog does. The 1978 has a JCP68W as the TOL 40" range with P7 oven. Looks like you have the 1976 equivalent of it.

And, I agree that a rack from almost any 40" GE range with a P7 oven should be interchangeable.

Hi Ken,
I don't know without your oven measurements versus the 27" p7 wall ovens but your picture certainly makes me think the oven cavities are the same, might make it easier to source a rack if that is the case. Hopefully you can find one close by but, if not for some reason, my P7 wall oven cavity is 19" wide, the rack is about 18 3/4" wide by about 17 1/8" deep roughly, and if someone closer by or a used appliance store can't provide you with one I could but I hope we don't have to enquire about shipping cost from the west coast of Canada to east coat of USA and you find one quickly, as well I will be away from first week of January until end of February-in the land of both bajaespuma and high suds, so if your friends can wait 'til then if nothing local shows up sooner, you can message me here, great that stove comes complete with the roast probe too.

My favorite 40"

This model of GE 40" dual oven was my favorite, with rotary controls. These were in my honest opinion, the best GE stove they ever made. I would love to have one in white. Here in the central valley, I would love to have one for the garage, during summer, instead of turning the stove, or oven on in the house. Great for the holidays when entertaining.
Hugs,
David

GE P740 inch electric ranges

These were truly great ranges, durable, and great performance. I also liked the ones with the push button burner controls, the pushbutton controls were more reliable, but a little less versatile, but more predictable.

The ovens always worked well, only slight problem was the small oven, which should be more economical, actually ends up, using as much power as the larger self cleaning oven, but it was still a nice set up to have both ovens.

As wonderful as these ranges were, I wouldn’t really want any freestanding range because we do a lot of cooking. I much prefer the sleek, built-in induction cooktop and the wall oven. It’s a whole lot, less to clean every time you fry things on top of stove like these GE, it’s just too much stuff to clean, but would make a great second oven as you mentioned.
