It has never advanced on it's own but now the solenoid for the pump and also the one that engages the spin will not engage. I'm just presuming that it is a timer problem. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

More than likely it needs a new motor timer if all the functions of the washer work as indicated when you manually turn through the timer.

timer no advance
I had that problem with mine when I first got it.I blasted the advance motor with wd40 and let it sit overnite then the next day blasted it with electronic controls cleaner.After I did that ,off it went.
