My bf is on the board of a condo building, 170 condo units. The current laundry equipment is going to be replaced and he is wondering what the best make of laundry equipment might be. They are looking at front loading washers, probably either Maytag MHW6630 (with steam) or Electrolux EFLS627 (with steam). Would these be good units to select? something else? How many unit cycles could be expected?

The Maytag is a new design, so we don't have much if any feedback on those.
And they are middle of the line, if even.

The ELux is IMO the better known better performer with better performance per efficency (so to speak) and especially the dryers are just plain better, gentler, more on point in sensing.
And if the 627 is too expensive (even though the 627 matching dryer is apparently just unbeatable) the 527 still has a heater and steam and is more on-par with the Maytag feature wise and still has many of the benefits (same recirc, same underlying wash cycle design, same dryer platform and still pretty amazing sensing even though its the one step down in sensing technology from ELux) the 627 would have.

But if they have to place an order in the 3 digit thousands of dollars, maybe just getting a set of each for 2 people on the board and having both try both switching sets after a week or 2 might be a fair idea.

Hi Gary, are you talking about 170 pairs of machines ? , What is in there now and how and have they held up ?

 

Also what did the residents like and dislike about what is there now.

 

What are energy and water costs like.

Hi John,

They are putting in 8 washers and 8 dryers. The usage for each machine is approximately 50 loads per week. Energy and water costs are not an issue. The current machines do not clean well and do not have enough features. They would like washers with steam. The current machines are supplied by a company called Coinamatic at an annual cost of $10000 which includes repairs. They want to stop leasing the machines and buy their own. The condo board wants to know if residential type machines would be suitable rather than commercial quality.

Do you know how many loads the Maytag and Electrolux are rated for?

I personally wouldn't get anything that doesn't have a filter trap cleanout that isn't easily accessible. But that's just me. The LG 3900 series look interesting, I haven't seen them out yet. The Electrolux gets rave reviews, but again, the trap that requires a service call is the only reason why I didn't get it.

I think it makes a great deal of economic sense for the Condo to buy and maintain their own equipment, We are involved in dozens of situations like this here in Washington DC.

 

I would differently identify a good service company and ask what machines they would recommend and would like to work on, this can make all the difference between having an efficient laundry experience and a white elephant where there are always broken machines and the condo ends scraping the deal.

 

I know they are interested in a steam feature witch is understandable because the machines they have now are doing such a poor job, but the steam feature has very little value and takes a long time to run such cycles when you may have others waiting to do their laundry. The current poor cleaning probably mainly stems from machines that have quick cycles designed for quick turnover.

 

For 50 loads perweek I would differently go with digital touch controlled Speed Queen machines Washer and dryers. 2nd choice would be the Commercial FL machines from WP or MT. If you want to go out on a limb and get something like the Electolux washers just don't get the dryers and use 1st choice SQ dryers or maybe WP-MT dryers. EL dryers are not holding up well at all we are constantly pulling stuff out of the blowers, belts are breaking and it just a cheaply built hard to work on machine, its in the league with Samsung & LG.
