Bibliography, whaterver speaks of washers...

Hi everyone!

I'm at the end of my University studies, the "final exam" will be surely next year when I'll be ready.

That's the point. The argument of my "tesi" (that's how we call the final work of who's arrived at the end of his Universtity studies) will be WASHERS! Yeah! I have already spoken with the professor ("relatore") and he accepted to follow all the work.

Now, as I have to list a bibliography, that's every book/source/article/movie I have to read/watch/scan to help my work going ahead, I need all of your help

Would you please point me every book/magazine/article/movie/ecc. wich you remeber speaking/treating of WASHERS?

I thanks every of you, and I will be very glade if you could help me.

PS: Does anyone knok how to set the advaced reasearch on google to help me find better result than only putting "washers" (lavatrice, as it will be in Italian), in the searching paramters?

Hello Diomede,

Try also searching for "washing machine". At the moment I can't think of a book about washers, perhaps the Miele 100 year book might give you some information.

You are going to have more success finding articles in serials, periodicos? and chapters in books. In the Library of Congress Cataloging scheme, T is technology and TX is domestic technology and appliances. I don't know what system your libraries use, but in this area you will find the bound issues of industry magazines like Appliance Manufacturer, Finish (which had to do with porcelain finishes) which changed its name later to maybe Appliance Manufacturer. Other trade magazines having to do with electrical manufacturing will contain articles about washers.Books on equipping a home will usually have chapters on laundry appliances. Books and periodicals on Home Economics are found here and they have information and pictures of washers in various places. Here is where you will find the magazines that tested and rated products. Our titles were Consumer Reports and Consumers' Research Bulletin (which is not what it was in the 50s and 60s). The British title is Which. Maybe you have some type of publication like this?

Then there are the domestic shelter magazines like Better Homes and Gardens, American Home, etc that are classed in the N heading which is devoted to ART. I believe NA is the part of the schedule where bound back issues of these can be found. These titles discuss furnishings, gardening and appliances. The magazines from the 50s had the most articles on washers, dryers and ironers. I don't know what the time frame would be in your country. Of course, you will want to go from the broadest coverage to the more specific like starting with a definition from a dictionary, moving to entries in encyclopedias and broaden the citations to books and serials. I guess you do not have to list every advertisment for washers, just pictures in articles? I think your topic is a bit broad and maybe should be limited by a time span or some other limit because otherwise you are going to be listing citations until you are retired.

Hello Diomede.

The good will you consistently show here is your best resource. You must be very well liked and know a million people, and so you probably know or have befriended a good librarian. Get busy. Librarians are amazing in what they can find. It's wonderful that you get to do your "tesi" on washers. I'm with Tom re: Consumer Reporrts and the older Consumer Union. Once when young, I tried to find "washer books" and all I got were books on professional laundries. As far as I know, the ultimate washer book has yet to be written, and I honestly think that Robert will write it when he retires. Good luck--can't wait to see what you select when you narrow your topic:

They mentioned Sonic Youth's album, "Washing Machine," but not Kate Bush's "Mrs. Bartolozzi."
