In the UK did any of you get or give new applicances for today?  How many still celebrate Boxing Day?  WE have freinds here that do.

Boxing Day is the biggest shopping day of the year here in Canada and most commonwealth countries akin to Black Friday in the US. Black Friday is also gaining ground here as well though it doesn't have the traditional fervor. I don't participate anymore although when I was young I sure did. Best time to buy all your electric/electronic gizmos. The last time I did was about 4 years ago for a 32" LCD tv.
Back in the old days.. like more than 20 years ago let's say I think it was better and there were better but limited deals. AND it was only ONE DAY, December 26th. Now it's Boxing Week everywhere,, there's really no such thing as Boxing Week.. just another excuse to drag it on and advertise.

Honestly I can usually find great deals on stuff just poking around stores looking at clearance items.. Like about 2 months ago I was in Meijer and found an electronic CrockPot TOL model marked down to $29, then another 25% off and a coupon. I got it for around $19.. So last week I'm in Meijer again and there's the same TOL crockpot now on clearance for $19.99 so of course I bought another one to gift away. Last Thursday I'm in Canadian Tire and find my Hamilton Beach Brewstation for $39 so I figure.. that'll be a good gift for my sister since she liked mine when she saw it.. So really who needs Boxing day anymore.

Pete,

I couldn't agree with you more.  In fact, we shop year round for certain Christmas gifts because you can find some really great deals at odd times of the year.

Our big day used to be Christmas eve.  When living in Houston and New Orleans in the 70's and 80's would got to K Mart and catch their Blue Light specials.  Our favorite K Mart in NOLA was a converted Fed Mart.  It was huge and they would throw the blue light on a whole asile and say everything on this asile is $5.00 for the next 10 minutes be it dolls or other toys.  One was also for the first rechrgeable lights and we ppicked up several for giftes throughthe year.  Got lots of birthday gifts that way.  Gaylords, Barkers and Zayre was pretty good on that also.  We would then get home and get things put awasy and have our Christmas eve party opening presents from family.  Christmas morning everything was from Santa for the kids and from each of us to each other all Santa.

We still do it this way today having the whole family at our home for Christmas Eve and gift giving then eveyone is at home to have Santa on Christmas day.
