My wife and I spent this past week at a cabin in the mountains of North Carolina.

There was a 2017 Samsung stacked front load washer and dryer in the cabin. Opened the door of the washer and the mold smell just about knocked me down. The door seal was covered with black mold. Ran detergent (with hot water) in the washer before we used it (didn't have any bleach or vinegar). Also wiped down the seal as best I could with a damp rag. Dryer was just fine.

Then I went to the middle of the line Whirlpool (plastic tub) dishwasher. Checked the removeable filter. It was clogged with gunk. Cleaned the filter and reinstalled into the DW.

I don't understand why owners of vacation units don't take care better of their appliances!!! I know its a money making thing!!!

Anyway I had to vent to people who understand what I'm talking about!!!

Stay well!!!
Peace to all!!!

If I owned a vacation rental property, I'd equip it with no-nonsense, tough to kill appliances.  I'd even consider a vintage Maytag, like the lowest model with large tub.  Or a more recent DD Whirlpool sourced machine.  Absolutely not a FL machine that could become a mold factory when subjected to regular misuse.

I don't know what I'd pick for a dishwasher, but again it would have to be a workhorse that was tough to throw off its game.

I'd also be very engaged and proactive about maintenance, and do my best to screen potential renters in order to protect my overall investment.

Moldy FL Washer In A Vacation Rental

All it would take is a sign instructing renters to leave washer door and detergent tray open when leaving, along with instructing the cleaning crew to only wash bead linens and towels in HOT water with LCB added to the BD.

As for the DW The cleaning crew can run it while they are there with a DW cleaner about 4 times a year.

Hi  David, If you know the owner I would let them know, if not complain to the rental agency, the moldy washer would be a real turn off to many renters and might even make someone sick that is sensitive to mold etc.

Mold and allergies

John,

You may hit the nail on the head!!! I’m allergic to various types of mold!!!

We were there for 5 days. Every day I had some of the worst sinus migraines that I’ve had in a very long time. Got back home they cleared up.

I’m going email them today!!! This could cause more serious side effects in other people. It could cause anaphylactic shock. Especially the elderly or people with breathing issues.

Thanks!!! Peace and good health!!!
David
