Saw this article in the local Reno paper and found a link to the story. It's an interesting idea but do you think it will fly? Can people afford to miss work and the income and will employers just use this as an excuse to fire the call-ins? Could the terminated people fight being fired as a discrimination issue? I'm curious to hear your viewpoints.

I don't see this effort being all that successful. Too many people are not "out" at work and I don't think this would be the best method to "out" ones self. I suppose in SF or WeHo it might gain steam, but doubt there would be much participation here in the closeted suburban world of Silicon Valley.

Meanwhile, John Stewart did a great job of arguing in favor of same sex marriage with guest Mike Huckabee on "The Daily Show" last night.

Regarding Call in Gay

I think there was enough notice, certainly for me. But if it is plan right next year, it might work.

Alternate idea.

"Calling in Gay" seems just sooo punitive.
How about "Bring a Gay to work day" !
Jeepers, the breeders bring their rug-rats to work. Let's all bring a friend to work on our day! Think of the novel activities we can drum up.

I can see the situation now. Employee calls into work for gay day. Employer explains to employee that he was hired to do a job. Didn't ask you about your sexuality when I hired you. I really don't care as long as you do your job. You are taking a day off for your sexual preference. I still have to pay ss, unemployement and a host of other taxes. I guess you can take the rest of your life off from here. I will hire someone else who is capable of working when expected. I can see this happening. If this is planned well in advance and you can give notice that you want that day off then no problem. You can use a vacation day. It's not the time to piss off your employer with the amount of people out of work. If you are working be thankful because so many companies are laying off. Today alone on the depressing news yahoo laid off a large group along with 3 other major companies. Not a good idea. Something needs to be done but not "look how much we provide in the working place." Actually who cares. We all have to work, no color, religion or sexual preference makes any difference in this arena of life called work. I do love the idea of bring a gay to work day. That sure would liven up the place. Sorry didn't mean to offend anybody with this.

It would be tough for me to call in gay

I am out at work and its no big deal. Everyone is very supportive and its really a non issue. (I know that I am fortunate). I am sure if I did it, my boss would be like "ok, do what you need to do." But it would be interrupting operations for a corporation that has not given me any trouble about my sexuality.

I chuckled about the "Bring a gay to work" day, but just see that as a bad photo op waiting to happen (there are a lot of wackos out there, both gay and straight).

The only way things are going to change is for more of us to live our lives openly, not forcing anything on people nor accepting a second class role. WE need to think its not a big deal to be gay before others can think that.

Just my 2 cents...

LOL

Nobody would be at work. My boss and all of my co workers. I work at a gay dental office. I guess there would be a hygenist but thats about it.

Ill-Considered Move:

I thought this one was a pretty terrible idea, frankly. No one, and I mean no one, needs to be taking the slightest risk with their job right now, and the organisers behind this idea should have known that. Because of that factor, the day fizzled, with very few people taking the chance. That makes it look as if people have sunk back into apathy, which is absolutely not the case.

There need to be movements, assemblies, marches and all the rest of it, but there don't need to be hare-brained schemes like this that backfire.
