Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

It's beyond surgery, you need a new agitator shaft (good luck with that) and at least an upper sleeve bearing. I'd also take a good strong look at the splines of the agitator for cracks. A rusty agitator of that magnitude is usually from water seeping through the agitator splines via cracks instead of forming an air bubble, as engineered.

Hi Mark, you can keep using the washer until it fails depending on how much you use it it might work a while but you need another transmission. That’s for sure if you want to rebuild it at some point

This would be a great time to upgrade it to the orbital transmission with a load sensor agitator and a 50 cycle motor pulley. This combination really gets the lead out as they say and you have a washer that will wash a lot more clothing and it’s a lot easier on the clothing a lot of fun too to get it spinning a little faster .

We get a lot of particularly Maytag top load stack machines that are in great shape. I just stripped one the other week that has a transmission that looks like new. We’re usually pulling them out when the washer dampers are shot so we can find a transmission for you if you want to rebuild this at some point. You will need a new seal and mounting stem kit to to go along with a transmission with a good shaft.

I have not found a modulating gas burner for your lady Kenmore dryer yet, keep your eyes out for a 66 through 69 Kenmore gas dryer with soft heat. It would have the right burner usually.

If it were me

This looks beyond surgery to me. The first thing I thought upon seeing your picture was "oof." You can definitely continue to use it for now, but once it quits, I don't think it will be an easy repair. A new agitator shaft will most definitely be necessary. I'd say it's almost time to bring it to the Maytag God, aka Eugene at Lorain Furniture/Appliance.

Thanks for the replies.  This machine will only see very light usage, so I'll keep using it occasionally for now.

I'll keep in mind that it will need a complete overhaul with a new transmission etc.  For historical/nostalgic reasons, I'd like to keep this machine running in its original configuration with a pitman transmission and Power-Fin agitator.  Finding parts will be a challenge.

John, thank you very much for checking your stock of modulating gas burners.  If I'm ever able to acquire one, that will be a fun project!

From my experience, I just leave things alone. While the machine may perform better with a 50hz pulley, it’ll put more wear and tear on clothing and the machine itself.

The only time I modify things is when I can’t find or locate replacement parts, that’s exactly why I’m in the process of transplanting Mark 18 consoles on my Whirlpools since I’ve had no luck finding a replacement timer for the washer. There could be other ways to fix it but at this point, it’s essentially putting lipstick on a pig and who knows what other issues may arise with the timer.
