Bob, I think it's storage.

On those Calorics the knob on the far left is the thermostat control and the knob on the far right is the fucntion selector for the oven (OFF, BAKE, BROIL, TIMED BAKE, and sometimes CLEAN); jsut like an electric self-cleaner.

Methinks it can be seen if one looks closely and/or blows up the pic size.

Caloric!

We had a caloric my family purchased in 1977 with top and bottom self cleaning oven. It was a nice looking stove but thats all I can say for it. Nothing but one problem after the next. Caloric swapped out the unit 4 times and finally gave my parents their money back and they bought a Roper, that they still have. I knew other people with calorics and they also had problems. They were well made ranges in the 40's and 50's but after that ng.

I guess everyone is different.

I bought a gas-self cleaner by Caloric in the early 90's and it looked jsut like the one shown. It had regular burners (not sealed). My mother bought the same one and so did my sister as they replaced theirs stoves all around the same time period. Mine had the clock stop a few years ago. I was able to still self-clean, I just had to time the process.
My mother still has hers and her door hinge broke and her bake ingnitor went. We were lucky with ours. No maitenance issues.

Calorics were famoud for their "ultra-ray" infra-red (gas) broilers that heated a rectangular wire-mesh with a gas flame until it glowed red. In our self-cleaners the boiler was in the oven cavity with a storage drawer below the oven. It was the broiler-from-hell in terms of power. Would burn anything broiling unless the food was near the bottom of the oven.

But then again appliances LIKE living with my family. We treat them well and keep them clean.

No offense intended here but this is a "Raytheon" Caloric stove which means this was manufactured on an assembly line somewhere in SC not handcrafted by the Mennonites of Topton, PA who created the Caloric tradition. The burners are ordinary and the side opening is a lame storage addition designed so the stove would fit old openings. I'd pass on this.

Caloric!

In our Caloric the main oven always used to die in the middle of cooking. The self cleaning cycle always had some type of problem and the ignation for the oven was defective and replaced each time the stove was replaced. And as far as maintance no one takes care of appliances better than my mother. She is so fanatic that even her 28 year old Roper looks like she got it yesterday. Also another person I knew with a Caloric had the top burners melt into the stove.
So as far as I'm concerned caloric sucked just like todays LG!

Caloric!

Their were several companies that made the self cleaning gas ranges in the late 60's and early 70's but their performance was not as good as the electrics. Their was problems with a lot of them but caloric was by far the worst!

A friend of my family has this same exact Caloric.....

and she has been without an oven for almost 10 years. She got hers in 1977 and between then and 1995 & 2000 she had to replace the oven ignitor coil 5 times...... finally she just decided to let it go since she lives alone and very rarely has use for an oven.

Calroic in the late fifties, made some beautiful ranges, Automatic burners, high lighted backsplashes, and outlets. The pictured range was a "slide in" kind of a built in appearance in a long run of cabinetry. The chrome at each side was to be flush with the countertop, the one pictured looks early 70's. while its not a tappan doughboy, its not butt ugly either. alr2903

Our friends had the POS range in 1977 when they bought their new house. It was a builders special. lol When the self cleaning cycle was on the top of the stove got so hot, that it actually boiled the water in a tea kettle sitting on the burner. It was a pain to clean the burners, and did not bake well. She replaced it after a few years along with the POS Caloric dishwasher.
