I'm trying to find a retailer in Canada (preferably in British Columbia) that sells the glass Chemex coffee makers. I know they're still around. They are a manual drip machine, glass, hourglass shaped and have a wooden grip around the neck tied with leather strings. These babies make the best coffee you've ever tasted and use a natural unbleached filter that you fold to fit the top. This maker was featured episode after episode on the Mary Tyler Moore show for about the first 2-3 years of the series. I don't mind mail order. Go Mare!

I've also been thinking about getting a Chemex. (One of my aunt's had one and I have fond memories of the coffee it made.) I wonder if the Chemex company would be able to point you to a source in Canada? Here's their contact information:

Chemex® Corp.

They do make great coffee!

Years ago I had the automatic chemex maker. Have you ever seen those? You use the same glass carafe with the paper filter but you place it in the maker. You put the water in the back. It heats the water, then when the water hits 200 degrees it let out just enough water to wet the beans, sat two minutes (just like chemex recommends) and then began to pump the water into the beans. When it was finished you could remove the paper with the beans and put the glass cover on. It even had a programmable base to adjust how hot you wanted your coffee.

I'd love to find one of those again. I think I still have a carafe or two in storage somewhere.

Chach, my sister has had a Chemex automatic for years and uses it daily. It seems to be a variation on the early 70's Norelco automatic drip but has the "shower" type emitter and does the pause thing as you have stated. I think she'll pay whatever it might cost to have this thing repaired if it ever fails her. I'm thinking the old Norelco at my mom's might come in handy for parts if she can't find anyone to fix it when the time comes. I'm always on the lookout for replacement caraffes for her. My local coffee roaster sells them but at a premium price. Thrift stores have them sometimes too.
