Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

WH cooktop--Thanks, Greg

I found one of these in the 80s and restored it, even painting the whole box with Rustoleum. This is the deluxe model with the Super Corox. Both this model and mine have the color wheels so you get the pretty colors in the lens above each dial. I love old Corox units.

Each one of the switches uses a C-7 bulb to light the color wheel. The surface unit switches in these WH ranges are fragile. The elements last, but the switches don't and the Super Corox would have to be converted to strictly 120 volt operation to save both the element and the switch.

$300 is too much, especially with the ding to the trim. The seller either paid too much or is dreaming of dollars. Maybe they have been watching those shows where people make money off stuff they find.

These Westinghouse units have almost funnel-shaped reflector pans and below each sits a little aluminum pan about 4 inches across and maybe an inch deep to catch what falls through.

New Westinghouse Cook-Top

These were a really neat cook-top and they cooked well, But as Tom alluded to the surface switches were not great and if you attempted to use the LF super speed element much you would be lucky if it lasts a year. I had a older good friend that had a 1956 WH range with this speed element and after the forth time she had it replaced she had it converted to a regular speed element. Still a very cool Cook-Top but I think that $100-150 is much closer to its real worth.

Bad switches

When my mother remarried in 1986, they bought a house built in 1961 that still had the Westinghouse cooktop and 30" oven in the kitchen. One of the switches was bad and as it turned out, never completely cut the power to the right front element. There was a box set on top of the cooktop during the move and overnight, it heated an aerosol can warm enough to explode and cause a small fire. The cooktop, hood and pink & gray boomerang countertops were all "updated". The oven was OK and was one of the best baking ovens we ever had.

In my hometown...

There is a neighborhood that was built between 58 and 63, ALL WESTINGHOUSE, and I would estimate 3/4 of the cooktops are still being used.

Cool Chambers Appliances

The ref and freezer are older Sub-Zero units, and the dual fuel cook-top is certainly interesting.

Why On Earth Would Someone Remove These???  Hans you have to consider the type of home these are installed in, few owners of million dollar plus homes would want outdated appliances, even though we know that they could be used years longer.

We see this all the time in our area, often the nicest homes are the ones getting remolded. It is much like people that buy really nice cars, few drive them all that long, but the nice thing is some of this trickles down to us middle class folks, at least the are trying to sell them.

I guess I dont!!

Have any comprehension of thinking like people do today, it just does not make sense to install something new, especially when what is there is so much better quality.

Nice Westinghouse cook top & very much like the one my late-grandmother had in her Bay Area Apt. in Cali.

Is the "Super" feature a high-speed-heating unit? Wonder if a temperature-controlled element would have a similar trade-name?

Super Corox...

Basically the same as Frigidaires Speed Heat, What it is is a 120 volt unit that , for the first 20 to 30 seconds ,gets a surge of 220 volts, then switches back to 120, the theory is good, it does get red hot in half a minute or less, but usually the switch that controls it is short lived, but, the one on my Norge works like a charm, and is a 1955 model!

The process can really stress the element also because it pushes about 5000 watts through a 1250 watt 115 volt element and if the element shorts, it generally takes the control with it, unless the control is protected by a fuse. When a surface unit shorts out, it can act like an arc welder and burn a hole through the bottom of a Club Aluminum pan which gets pretty dramatic. A friend had it happen and it is something that made a memory.
