Charlie your Kirby is just beautiful. It really is a sight!! I have a feeling that most of us here enjoy the vacuums a lot. Yay Austin, you are so right. Why is it so hard to just skip a posting that you are not interested in and let it go at that? Austin I do hope that you and your mom are able to attend the VCCC convention in June.

Kirby vs Hoover-In tests I have done at home---the Kirbys and Royals beat any Hoover I have.Use the "dirt Meter" on my Kirby-the same ones the salesperson uses-and keep in mind the dirt meter is LESS efficient than the bag.Since I don't have a dirt meter for the Hoover-surprized they didn't have one-the Kirby or Royals in my book dig more dirt than the Hoover.I have very deep cut plush pile carpet.I have one Kirby Classic Omega whose "lo" speed doesn't work-when you put the floor nozzle on that one-WOW-it really digs the dirt.On those Hoovers though-they dig more dirt than ANY modern clean air vac.

Terry, yes I had a pre-owned/loved Kirby, identical to Mikes, the Tradition. I had fun with it, but never really grew to like it. It seemed cumbersome trying to maneuever it in close quarters and it gave quite an aerobic workout. Not a bad thing! Ultimately, I sold it. I must admit this blasphemous statement, but I really love my Hoover Windtunnel Widepath. It's great. But the plastic housing pales in comparision to the Kirby in all its chrome regalia.

Our friend Beth, she's is just a little thing, barely 100 lbs., has one of the new Kirby Ultimate self-propelled machines and she loves it. The vacuum is nearly the same size as she is! I've played with it a bit and it is quite cool. So with all this Kirby excitement, the bug has bit and I'm on the hunt. In the junk, thrift and goodwill/salvation stores, I see Kirbys from time to time, so I'll be looking.
 
Good luck Leslie, I hope you find one soon and I know that you will. There are a ton of them out there. Like you they are not my favorite vacuum to clean with but they sure are fun to look at and to play with. Terry

Does it clean better than an Oreck? I've always wondered about those vacuums. Is it loud? Is it well built and durable? How long were they made? Just curious...

It has a rather unusual brush roller, and a much larger fan than Oreck, so it moves lots more air.
It does a decent job cleaning too. Its one fault is it hugs the carpet a bit too much.
They were made starting in the late 60's and all done by about 1975 or so.

I didn't know you could use Oreck bags in the regina upright but i guess that makes sense. I have a package of Regina Brush N Beat bags that i have had for years and now i finally have the vacuum that uses them. I'll get ahold of oreck bags though. i see them in the thrift stores all the time. Marty

I've had that Regina since 2002, a gift from my friend Tony. It had an original Regina bag in it when I got it, but it was full and smelled funny. The connector tube is almost the same as Oreck's and their bag fits perfectly.
Now you can use that Regina!

Is that really the cost of a rebuild? My parent's still have (and use) the Heritage they got in 1981 or so. After 25 years, theirs is beginning to look, well, 25 years old. We knew that the service was available, but not that it was so reasonable. IF that is indeed the price, I think theirs is going to have to have a makeover!

The price got higher with the later models. You will have to find the original warranty which will state the price. You will also need this for them to do the rebuild, unless the original distributor is still around.
 
Eek, well there's the rub. I'm sure that that bit of paperwork is long lost. And the Kirby agent that sold it disappeared at about the same time.

Fear not! We at the VCCC can probably find an original owner's manual and then can guide you through the process of having your Kirby receive the spa treatment.

Email me and I will help you with this. I just need to locate a manual for a Heritage I. Correct me if I am wrong, but I am assuming it is the Heritage I in black with some red on the bag.

The Heritage 1 was the first year that Kirby implemented the "Rebuild Agreement"--a separate card that you needed to hold onto in case your Kirby ever needed a rebuild. I do have a Heritage 1 manual at home, I'll double check later on.

The owner's manual is no problem--it's in the case with the attachments. I remember seeing the rebuild agreement in a desk drawer about 18 years ago--before my parents moved. Heaven knows where it is now, if it didn't get pitched. Next time I'm at my p's, I'll check the more obscure places--just in case.

It is a Heritage I, with black (really dark gray) trim and a red bag with the Kirby "K" logo printed all over it. And a "Turbo" logo on the front of the handle. How 1980s can you get?--"Turbo".

I have exactly the same Kirby. Got it for $15 at a garage sale. Of course it's not polished either - but I can do that. However it's lacking any sort of attachments, and I think there's something missing from the bag area. There's just the outer bag with the pocket, and I can't see any way to fit a paper bag. What else does it need in order to use replaceable paper bags?
 
The original Classic III bag is a red tartan and doesn't use paper bags, you're meant to open the hatch on the bottom of the sani emptor and dump it out, sticking your hand all the while in that little half zipper pocket to help dislodge the dirt. You can get a replacement bag and attachment for using paper, mine came with that but I changed it back to the original as soon as I found one.
 
I have a Classic 3 as well-very nice machine.There is other ways you can convert those or other older Kirbys-those with the "rear dishacarge" fan openings-I use a Kirby Heritage 2 outer bag that uses paper ones.It has a smoked plastic Mini-emptor on it-no dust door-and the cloth zipper bag can take the round intake hole Kirby paper bags-even the newer Filtrete Kirby bags can fit in it.I ran into the bag from one of the vac dealers here that had a box of "misc parts" had a "Bojack" DVC Kirby bag and the one adescribed above.I have used the Heritage bag on most of my rear discharge Kirbys-including 500's and it works great.No more dusty bag dumping-but still the dump bags were part of the older Kirby vac expereinces.

I remember once in the 70's my Aunt bought a Classic lll for $600.00 and when my uncle found out he hit the roof!!! He made her return it and get her Electrolux R back. Before it was returned though, i borrowed it to clean our house and used just about every attachment short of the rug renovator. Years later long after my Aunt and Uncle divorced, my cousin found the red Suds o Gun in the garage and gave it to me.
