I was going through my cabinet under my laundry tub and came across a box of Climalene, of recent vintage. It's been there for years, box split open along the side, contents are a brick, but I was wondering what it was originally, since it says "Phosphate Free" on the box.

I remember my mother using it for years, especially for diapers in the good old days (yeah, right...). I seem to recall it being crystalline in structure rather than a powder, any idea of it's make up? Did it work?

It was a water softener/booster

made in Ohio (Barberton, a suburb of Akron,) and was very popular in its distribution area (mostly Great Lakes).

We used it once in a while.

There was a bathroom bowl cleaner by the same company, called, I kid you not, "Bowlene."

Extinct Products

When I was clearing out my Gran's kitchen sink unit in 1998, I came across "Robin Starch" for laundry, "New Min" spray furniture polish from the 1970's, "Sparkle" spray furniture polish from the 1980's, an old bottle of "1001" multi-purpose detergent (NOTE: not just for carpet shampooing!).

I think there was even a box of "Reckitt's Blue", for laundry.

Oh, and in the kitchen airing-cupboard (hot water cylinder was originally built in there, as the original back boiler was fed via living-room coal fire), I came across a part box of Lever Brothers "Persil Automatic", with an offer for 'Day Saver' train tickets! That would be from the early 1980's.

I did try the Persil detergent in 1998 (in the Hoover Ecologic 1300), but it never properly dissolved, and led to powdery specks on the laundry.

Nu-Soft

I did try vintage Nu-Soft fairly recently.
At an absolutely phenomenal estate sale last year I came home with a number of unopened Nu-Soft fabric softeners. They come in these elliptically shaped cartony things.
I opened one up, threw some of it in a tub full of towels and found out that Nu-Soft did.....absolutely nothing.
I think after many years on the shelf the product became complete inert. Blue useless powder. Looks fun on a shelf though.

NuSoft

My mother used to use NuSoft fabric softener and IIRC, it smelled like coconut and softened well. The NuSoft I remember was a white liquid and came in blue plastic bottle.

I didn't buy the bottles

At the estate sale that netted me the Nu-Soft powder, the deceased also had bottles of Nu-Soft liquid.
Unfortunately the bottles of Nu-Soft liquid looked like blue placenta-laden jellyfish swimming among bouyant partially eaten flan.
.... And so I decided not to buy it....
Perhaps I could have saved the liquid Nu-Soft by putting it in a blender...
The Nu-Soft powder I found is pretty... pretty inert. But at least it doesn't look like a SMURF's runny nose. Nu-Soft doesn't age gracefully.
.. As it turns out, the deceased was a shop-a-holic from the 1960s. She filled the house and died. I in turn died and went to heaven at her sale.

Anybody remember King Fluff fabric softner? How about King Starch? It smelled like sassafrass tea.Their was also King syrup which was almost as thick as molasses.I always wonder what became of that company. They dissapeared about 20 years ago. King Fluff was a watered down pink colored fabric softner.

Paulg - Your Slip Is Showing!

Lingerie cling, would have referred to one's slip, especially if made from man made fibers such as polyester, rayon or such. Of course the whole problem could be avoided if one wore only silk undergarments, but.....

*LOL*

What Happened to King Syrup?

King Syrup and PotRik Molasses still exist! They were made part of Ralcorp Holdings and are now made by Carriage House. Their website is:

Oh how I used to love it when my mother bought home soft fresh bread and we just poured golden rich King Syrup over it. We really used to tear it up! Now I'm wondering if they still make King Syrup in Baltimore? Enjoy!

She filled the house and died. I in turn died and went to he

Ha Ha Ha!

That's a good one!

I laughed myself silly when I read it! LOL
