I've been thinking of the school cafeteria discussion currently going on here in Super. At some point, I began wondering about college cafeteria experiences good and bad. Favorite meals. Detested meals. And so on.

I never lived in a college dorm, so I personally had zero experience. My vision, right or wrong, was that the operation at my college was very much like a school cafeteria, except the victims, er, students were stuck eating there three meals a day. Although I was once in the cafeteria, because of a class, and I will say the environment, while "institutional cafeteria," was nicer than my elementary/jr. high/ high school cafeterias had been. Then, again, it would be hard to have a worse environment than my high school...

I was a commuter so I had the same experience you did. Don't even really know where the kids ate, TBH.

College cafeteria

The college cafeteria here was really expensive for the quality. The fries tasted like they'd been soaked in cold oil instead of frying. The hamburgers were ok, sort of but also greasy and soggy.

There were two lines, one was a snack bar ala-carte where the items were made to order. There was also a salad bar. The other line was like a regular cafeteria line for plate lunch. I never tried that one.

I ate there for about a year, then I started just driving to McDonald's or Wendy's for lunch. Or getting a sandwich at Publix on special ocassions.

During exam week, the breakfasts were free, so I'd get pancakes and sausage or ham and bacon. That was decent though.

Overall, the food in high school was actually better, in my opinion. But our high school cafeteria had a lot more options than just the standard take it or leave its.
