I turned on one of my desktops today and everything was fine. Did some window updates and norton update. Everything was fine after surfed the net for awhile. Was leaving for lunch and decided to do a norton complete disc scan. All was running well. I got back from lunch and it was still running but the monitor screen was acting strange. Everything was stretched out. You can barely see the start button on the bottom left of the screen. Same with the right. Everything in the middle of the screen is bowed in. What is the problem here? Is it the graphics display card or my monitor? I will try plugging in the other desktop thats sitting near it and vise versa over the weekend. Any ideas or thoughts on this.

It sounds like your monitor's display adjustments are out of whack; whether that had anything to do with Norton or not is anybody's guess. Someone could have played with the adjustments as a prank or something.

Anyway, what you do is to access the monitor's controls. Some monitors have physical controls (often behind a little door at the bottom of the screen), and some have menu controls (controlled by buttons at the bottom of the screen. If you'll do a little experimenting, you'll find a control for size; that one will shrink the size a bit (there may be a control for horizontal size and a second one for vertical). You'll also find a control for "pincushion", which will take care of the bowing.

It's really pretty easy once you get your controls figured out.
 
Thanks for the info. I did try playing with the monitor controls yesterday. The only 1 function that seems to work in the one for height. None of the other functions seem to be working. Ahhhhh. Then it must be the monitor. Will try this weekend switching things around with the other unit.

The monitor is a compaq model FS740. After thinking about it this morning over coffee I realized it is between 7 - 10 years old. Amazing how time flies. This is the 2nd computer I have had it on. I tried it on the other desk top this morning and it is definitely the monitor. The voltage transformer is on its way out. It is now unplugged from my computer and sitting on the floor for next weeks trash pickup. I will go out tomorrow and find a nice flat screen big enough that maybe that I won't have to wear my glasses anymore. LOL. No way am I going shopping today. Thanks for the assistace guys

So I went out Saturday and Staples was having a sale on most electronics. I picked up a 21 inch flat screen E machine monitor. Wow is all I can say. What a picture. Most definite improvement. It was listed for $219.00 on sale for 179.00. It is so big compared to my other monitor. The new one was cheaper than the old one I had. I believe I paid over 200.00 for the last one 7 years ago. This one also states in the literature that the light lasts and average of 3,000 hrs. I know it won't last as long as the old one, but I can deal with that.

DVI is worth considering...but before ordering a cable, make sure your computer has DVI support! It's pretty common now, but some (like cheap netbooks) still stick with VGA.

Also make sure the monitor has DVI support. Most, again, do--but some cheap flat panels are stuck on VGA.
