I am having a problem with my PC which I hope someone can help me with.

My computer is a 2002 HP running windows XP SP3. It was fitted with a 20gig hard disk with a partition makinmg 2 drives of 10gig each. I have since added a third disk (250gig) which is where I keep music, pictures and other stuff.

The problem I have is that, although there is virtually nothing on the C drive except the Windows XP operating system, it is almost up to the 10gig, the computer often runs slow and I am constantly getting "running out of disk space" messages. I run disk clean up regularly and the "swop" file is directed to the D drive which is about 30% utilized.

My question: is there an easy and cheap way to move or remove the disk partition so that I can get more space for the C drive? There is nothing on the D drive which cannot be re-installed in another location.

As the computer is so old I really dont want to spend much on it, on the other hand, as it continues to serve my needs pretty well, I would rather not junk it.

Thanks

Al

Hard Drive Partiton

Take a look at Acronis Disk Director or another drive/partiton tool. These tools let you change the size of the 'C' drive by shifting space from the 'D' drive. You should able to increase the 10G to a larger number to possibly eliminate the space issue. The link will give you more information.

Probably in regards to lack of space on the C partition, you have a lot of stray "temp" files that can be deleted.

Look in C:&#92Documents and Settings&#92[your user profile]&#92Local Settings&#92Temp&#92

Anything there dated older than the last reboot can be deleted.

There are other areas on the drive where stray files can accumulate, but Temp is the main one.  Check Temp under the other user profiles, if any, on your system as well.

A friend had the same problem, wanted me to install an extra/spare drive, but I found so much trash in his Temp folder, freed-up more than half his drive space.

hard drive space

A good cleanup up tool is CCleaner. It is free and has some other great tools in it. The link is below. It finds all kinds of left over files, shows you what it found and allows you to easily delete them. It give a summary of space recovered. After cleaning up the hard drive, a defrag would consolidate all of the files and space nicely.

I second trying CCleaner, it's free and does a great job of getting Crap ( the C in CCleaner...) off you hard drive.

you can also download for free Disk Space Fan, it will graphically display what is using up the space on the hard drive.

In addition to being a good way to delete temporary files, CCleaner also features a registry cleaner. It will also back up your registry before cleaning out unused or unnecessary entries. Often times these are command lines from programs no longer used or deleted, except the command wasn't removed from registry when you uninstall using Control Panel>>Install/Remove Programs
