I was on another web site (gardenweb, laundry board) and someone made a post that Consumer Reports just came out with new ratings. Here are the top 10 for Front Loaders:

Top ten in order:
1 HE4t
2 Duet HT GHW9400P
3 Bosch Nexxt Premium WFMC6400UC
4 LG WM2432H
5 Siemens ultraSense WFXD5200UC
6 Frigidaire LTF2940E
7 KitchenAid Superba KHWS01PMT
8 Maytag Neptune MAH8700A
9 Elite HE3
10 LG WM1814C

I am glad to see they updated their ratings. It is really frustrating to go to stores and find that so many of the washers aren't reflected in Consumer Reports. Having used the Neptune 8700 the last month, I was amazed to see that Consumer Reports noted it as one of the most quiet machines they tested! I think it performs very well, but quiet is not one of its positive attributes as far as I could tell.

When I went to Consumer Reports (on line) I noticed that they have added a feature where you can click on a button to "shop on line" for a given machine. Didn't try out that feature, but it is worth noting.

In addition to be more "updated", I wish Consumer Reports would include additional information on washers as noted below:

Size, CR ranks machines based on the circles (excellent, etc.) for size. To me it would be more useful if they would just provide the cubic feet (3.8, 3.5, or whatever)

Internal Water Heater - CR does indicate if a machine has ATC (automatic temperature control). As this is defined by CR, this indicates that the machine will mix hot and cold to a targeted temperature. As I understand it, ATC and having a internal water heater are two separate things. I wish CR would indicate about machines having water heater (maybe indicating to what temp machines will heat water).

Santize Cycle - In order to have a santize function, machines would need to have the internal heater. But not all machines with internal heaters have santize cycle.

List all cycles - Wouldn't it be great it CR would list the actual cycle each machines has? Even better if they could list them and define the attributes to each cycle rather than the limited information you get with white whitest, bulky items, etc.

Looking at the Consumer Reports, it is worth noting that the days when the top front loaders were expensive (over $1,000) whereas the top top loaders were relatively inexpensive ($600) appear to be gone. The new top load list is "topped" by several machines costing well over $1,000. It appears to me that the highest ranking top loaders are HE machines. It will be interesting to see with the new water standards to take effect if the days of cheap (under $300) top loaders will be gone.

When I get a chance, I will post the top 10 for top loaders.

CR Ratings for Top Loaders

Listed below are the top ten for Top Loaders. Actually, on closer examination, I overstated how expensive top loaders have become. Of the top ten, only one (number 1) is priced more than $1,000. There is certainly, however, a trend for increased costs for top loaders. If I am not mistaken, I belive that the top 7 of the top loaders are HE type machines.

Top Ten Top Loaders

1. Maytag Neptune TL 9800 A ($1,205)
2. Kenmore Elite 2506 ($850)
3. Whirlpool Calypso ($695)
4. Fisher & Paykel 1WL12 ($850)
5. GE Profile Harmony 9360 ($890)
6. GE Profile Harmony 9350 ($900)
7. Fisher & Paykel GWL11 ($630)
8. Maytag SAV4655 ($460)
9. Whirlpool Gold ($500)
10. Amana NAV333A ($400)

For those on a budget, there are a number of machines between $400 and $300 lower on the list. Ranks 11 through 25 has 8 machines in this price range.

BUT HERE IS THE FINE PRINT…

The only 2 front loaders in the top ten that Consumer Reports recommends are #9 and #10 (Elite HE3 and LG WM1814C).
The only 2 top loaders in the top 10 that Consumer Reports recommends are #8 and #9 [Maytag SAV4655 ($460) and Whirlpool Gold ($500)].

And that's part of what makes no sense about CR ratings. How can they consider a top-rated machine as being not recommended?

"Maytag's Neptune TL 9800A is the BEST toploader currently available ... but we don't recommend it [for reasons that we can't divulge!]."

Best By vs Top Rated

CR has different critera for choosing between "best buy" and "highest rated",and IIRC value for money factors heavily into the later.

Take last month's ratings of laundry detergent; though several versions of Tide topped the ratings, none were rated a "best buy", that choice went to fourth rated "Kirkland" laundry detergent. It is easy to see why: according to CR the three top rated versions of Tide cost about 36 cents on average per wash load. Kirkland having the same wash test results came in at 14 cents per load, hence a "best buy". Consumer Reports is doing nothing different than someone choosing one brand of product over another when both are of equal performance based upon cost.

I use CR only as a guide to what is out there and for abstract finaical and insurance products.

Hey Brits.. wouls anyone kindly post some excerpts or links from your verison of "Consumer Reports" called "Which?" Tks.

Too bad Maytag dicontinued the SAV/NAV (sorta redisgned Amana) washer. Now the only Maytag-badged TL washers will be basically a Performa/Norge/Chef washer & it's ugly cousin, the Atlantis. Thank God I'm an independant dealer & still have the Dependable Care to sell (for now, anyway).

could anyone please explain to me what machines the current maytag lineup is based on. .ex the Atlantis

Consumer Reports

Can anyone tell me which consumer reports this is in I bought the October issue but only had laundry detergents listed no washing machines.

Utopia, the Performa platform basically came from Norge. These models you'll see with the brands: Performa (PAV, HAV), Magic Chef (CAV....), Crosley (not owned by Maytag, but they make the CW series washers ie CW6500W), & Admiral.

The Maytag Atlantis series (MAV6451AWW, etc) is based off the same platform. They use the same pump, but it was moved to the front of the base & it uses a little bit different belt. They also use the same transmission. The top is porcelain coated instead of powder coated. They are very, very close siblings.

The Maytag SAV washers (& the Amana NAV2330,3330,5800,6800,
8800) washers are an Amana-based washer with a version of the Performa transmission. The early versions of these machines had some bad main seal & bearing problems. That seems to have been pretty much rectified. BUT NOW THESE HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED!

The new Maytag-badged MAV5920, 4755, 3955, 3905, 3855, 2755 & now the Amana NAV2335, 3335, 5805, 8805 are all based off the Performa/Norge/Chef design. whoopie (said with much sarcasm).

So now there's 2 Atlantis models (MAV6451 & MAV8551) & 6 of the "Maytags," all pretty much of the same designs.

If you go to an independant Maytag dealer, they can get you the LAV3600AWW, the Dependable Care model. This is the "tried & true" Maytag washer. It's my biggest seller as well. Porcelain coated top & inner wash basket.

thanks for you help
i was aware that the new "maytags" were not anywhere near the old reliable ones of before.. I noticed that the Perfoma series did look like the admiral/magic chef design.

Consumer Reports Came From May

I subscribe to on line Consumer Reports. The new ratings (including the Maytag Neptune 8700 and the new Frigidaire for the first time) just appeared on the on-line Consumer Reports just a few days ago. To me, it was news. Turns out however, according to postings on another web site, the ratings actually came out in May in the published CR.

Too bad they didn't report on the 9700 Neptune too. It has been available at Frys and the Maytag Stores for a few weeks now. I have heard that Home Depot, Lowes, and Sears will have it in a couple of months.

With the 9700 you get Direct Drive (no belt). Has anyone heard about reliability of Direct Drive compared to belt driven machines? I know LG has had Direct Drive machines for a couple of years.

Siemans

Is part of Bosch. The proper name for the company is "BSH" group which in German is too long for me to say after a few glasses of red wine, but it means "Bosch/Seimans?forgot the English translation for "H".

IIRC Bosch is selling it's "Nexxt" line of laundry appliances under the Siemans name at one or two particular stores chains. Basically the same units, though there maybe one or two small differences.

Siemens

Launderess, i'm appaled by the way you spell Siemens, you're always so precise. Anyway, the company is called "BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte (Household Appliances) GmbH". The biggest differences between Bosch and Siemens appliances are in the design of the control panels. Bosch control panels are a bit more curved while Siemens have more straight lines in their design.

BSH started in 1967 as a joint venture between "Robert Bosch GmbH" and "Siemens AG". Their appliances are also sold under the names "Neff", "Constructa" and "Gaggenau".
