I heard a month ago by one of our "elite" members that a Convention 2005 will be held that year, but it is still way "in the making." Hopefully, is this true?

Also, are upcoming conventions appropriate discussion for the Imperial forum?

I consider Robert, Greg, Jon, etc...to be "elite" members considering they know about the next convention(s)...

Convention 2005

There HAS to be another Convention! It has been WWWAAAYYY too long since I've heard the humming, swirling, splashing, pulsating, tumbling, etc of a vintage washing machine. The images of the 2002 convention are fading fast.

I watched the 2002 video and it really looked like you all had fun. Sure wish I discovered the site sooner. :(

Well, if/when there's another convention, and if I can go, I'll bring the GE Portable and the little tabletop Monitor, maybe even the '47 Bendix if I haven't sold it by then (although we can't spin...LOL). Now THOSE are machines everyone needs to watch, IMHO. Lots of water action!

Sadly, I didn't win the Electro-Mite "mini-agitub" washer on eBay...someone outbid me by only $1--darn!

There is a huge difference between someone inviting a few guys to their house for a weekend of wash and a convention, but it has evolved that any gathering is a convention of sorts. I have heard some rumblings about an all out, throw down, open to all convention Fall of '05, but nothing is definite.

It would be wise that until someone steps forth and actually gives a date and place of a convention, that all this speculation JUST STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are afraid that somehow you will not be invited to convention, then 1) there was an event that was not a convention and you truly weren't invited by the host (it's a host's perogative as to who he wants in his house), and 2) you are not reading posts clearly because when a convention is announced, it will be open to everyone.

Quit whining, quit speculating, and be patient.

Needlessly rude

I think the last two responses were needlessly rude and condenscending in tone. I couldnt see anything wrong in this thread other than a younger member who is eager to attend his first convention.
Considering the effort he has put into some of his appliances, I think this should be commended instead of being roused on for no real good reason.

apology.......

Sorry.... I was not meaning that in a rude way at all. I am sorry if it seemed that way. I, MYSELF am weeping like a big baby......because I would love to see the machines one day. I was not making fun of anyone wishing to see the machines.
Again, I AM SORRY IF IT CAME ACROSS THAT WAY ! Please forgive my adolesence.....I was just whining a little in fun :)

DVD video of the convention

Will a DVD video recording be made of the convention for those folks unable to attend? That would be another idea for a DVD for members.I would be most interested. It would be especially helpful for someone who doesn't have enough room for all of the goodies. But the DVD would fit nicely on a shelf!

Video of the 2005 convention

If it should become available-I would be most interested.Even for folks who attended-they could "relive" the event anytime they wanted at home.-And with the DVD format repeat scenes in the program as many times as they want without rewinding or wear on the disk or player!I hope others are receptive to the DVD video idea.I am especially anxious to get my video of the "pig"

Convention DVD

A DVD would be great for those of us that dont travel well! Good idea Rex!

Travel

Don:-I don't travel well anymore either. At this point have "cocooned" myself at home with my appliances and my home theater.Airline travel is now the pits.If you have to go somewhere it would be cheaper and better to drive. The last time I rode on the airlines was before 9-11 and the service was terrible.A freind of mine had ALL of his luggage lost by the airline he rode on.Another thought-not appliance related-but wouldn't it be nice to have BETTER passenger train service-You can't hijack a train!

Re. airlines: I just switched over to Jet Blue and they're darn good. Newer planes, wider seats, more leg-room. No hot meals, but ample snacks (buy a deli sandwich inside the secure areas if you want something like "dinner") and ample beverages (always drink lots of water on a plane, prevents dehydration headaches). Satellite TV at every seat, with 20 or so channels. The flight crews are very upbeat and apparently most of the employees have bought stock in the company.

Post-911 security has gotten very efficient, so the delays are minimal even though the TSA are very alert and very thorough. Be sure to take off your shoes and belt to put through the X-ray, anything metal on you will make you beep as you go through the metal detector, which makes it take longer. Look at your carrier's website for more info about security and restricted items. Cameras and film can be hand-searched; the new X-ray machines see through everything but don't hurt laptops or digital storage media.

I agree, good rail service would be a great thing. However it is still possible for bad people to do bad things to a rail system, and I won't go into detail about that in a public forum. If we let them scare us into hiding under our desks, they've won. So go ahead and travel if you like, and remember you're safer on a train or a bus or a plane than you are driving to work in the morning.

Traveling

I am like Rex, I like it at home so much I hardly ever go anywhere. I took the job I now have because its only 3 blocks from home. Our roads are much better but the increase in traffic makes me so nervous that after a day in Memphis Im totaly exhausted. ( But your right Bob friends make it worthwhile.)

Welcome

Oh! I forgot to say Welcome to Designgeek! Were glad to have you and I hope you enjoy this group.

Idea

Maybe Guru could set it up with a live feed!!!!!( Sorry Robert, I didn't start that nickname, but it does seem to fit!)
Would that be the S**T or what! Convention 2005 LIVE! Donate 15.00 to the site ( Which is well deserved I might add ) Paying for the host cost and the daily up keep is worth that!
Then you could become a gold member or something to get access to that link. I mean really guy's what he does is a lot of work! So what do you think Robert? And what does everyone else think?

job Location:

Don:I used to have a job that I could walk too-near Wash DC no less-didn't need a car and didn't own one at the time.If I needed to go anywhere elese-the subway, bus or cab got me there.
Now I work at a job that is 13 miles from my home in in the quiet countryside.Don't have to worry about those bad things out here.I now have to drive to work.and at night.there are bears in the woods out here-not safe to walk on the road here or at night. One time I encountered a black bear mom and her cub standing in the street-waiting several minutes for her and cub to cross.Just stayed in the car and watched-was NOT about to get out of my car.Was interesting.I would rather deal with the bears and deer, foxes and bobcats than with the Wash DC city life and their muggers. The disadvantage to way out here is air transportation is EXPENSIVE.

train hijacking

Hmm, Tolivac, I guess you never saw "Silver Streak", "Under Siege 2", or "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3" :-)

Yeah and neither one of you would believe the train that comes thru our town! Theres a slight grade and sometimes it has to make several attempts to get over it the engines are so old. Theres only one track, but theres only one train and sometimes they just stop it and leave it here all night. This is strange to me who grew up in the 60s when there were many trains a day!

Yes,I have seen those movies-what Hollywood portrays and real life is different.Remember Locomotives don't have steering wheels! In real life try hijacking a train and see how far you get?Its the RR Master Control that "steers" the train.A few years ago someone tried to steal a fully loaded freight train. He called the yard dispatcher asking him how to release the brakes and run the loco. They got suspicous right there and the real rail crew grabbed him!The perpertrater said he just wanted to see his parents.
DrMitch-what RR is it?Most are now upgrading to what is called "AC traction" locomotives.GE and EMD now build them. You can buy your own from GE for a cool 1.5million each! They will even paint your RR logo on it.These newer locos use AC induction motors to drive the wheel axles instead of the DC compound wound motors that older units use.It has been found that an AC traction loco has more tractive effort(pulling force) than an equivelent HP DC locomotive. They use VFD drives to run the motors in the AC locomotives.they also found the AC motors don't have "stall burn"like the DC ones do and no brushes to replace.Stall burn is the burning of the motors communtators if the engineer opens the engine throttle to much or quickly when he is starting a still train. The RR's are making money these days(doing better than the airlines)and are buying the new beautiful AC locomotives. Some even have an AC logo proudly displayed on their sides. The GE ones are especially neat. They have the "gull wing" rear engine radiators. They have a shorter in height center section(in front of the radiator)that contains the VFD traction motor electronics.

Maybe Guru could set it up with a live feed!!!!!( Sorry Robert, I didn't start that nickname, but it does seem to fit!)

I'm confused Bethann, a live feed of what????

Signed your tired webmaster.

Tired Webmaster

Like Tolivac said, a live internet feed from the convention. That way the people that couldn't attend could watch live. I know it would be a little much but it sure would be cool!

thanks

Drmitch, thanks for the welcome.

This is a very interesting place. I found this site whilst researching efficiency factors in major appliances, and it's been incredibly informative. I'm a telephone systems engineer (and Panasonic PBX systems dealer), but also do eco-industrial and eco-domestic design in my spare time.

In the past I've found that sites which bring together technical professionals and historic-interest hobbyists, are really good places to discuss potential improvements in the technology in question. In this case major appliances, and other household electrical goods. Energy and water conservation are becoming more important with each passing year, so I've started to get interested in the relevant design factors, and it looks like y'all are exactly the kinds of experts I'm looking to hook up with.
