Coppertone

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Great find Gary! They do look to be in MINT condition too. Can't beat that price for the quality one would get with these!

I do love the brown colour on the Maytags coppertone models from the 60's. I hate the brownish tan on the fronts though, and I wish they would have painted the entire cabinet that rich colour of brown. I may even have to paint one that shade someday.... <: GE had a nice rich brown in the late 70's early 80's and I like that too.
My aunt has a GE dishwasher still in use at her home the same colour. (she is in her early 80's now, and yes, she washes her dishes by hand in soap and water before washing them in the dishwasher...LOL!!)

Highlanders

The Fabric-Matic is a smaller capacity, single speed washer with a speckled porcelain on steel tub.The highlanders were a larger, family size capacity with a larger capacity white porcelain on steel tub, timed bleach dispenser, interior light,2 speed agitate and spin speeds, fabric softner dispenser and end of dry cycle chime. Both had porcelain on steel tops and washer lid. These would definately be nice to have and restore.I'd have to find some Intensified Tide to go along with them as well as either Rain Barrel or Cling Free spray dryer fabric softner(ruined many a dryer)and either Beeds O'bleach,Action Chlorine Bleach,Snow white,LaFrance Bluing or Lestare Oxygen bleach.Dash would be my second choice in detergent and powdered All my third choice.I would need to pour the detergent into the agitator as well as the fabric softner and over ride the lid switch. My mother load would be white sheets and pillow cases along with the liner.

Not Highlanders - much later

The "Highlander" models were long gone by 1975. They were the economy line in the 60's (and commercial machines - many of our local coin laundries were named Maytag Highlander Center) The Highlander name was dropped in 66 with the re-design and introduction of the "Wash-Power Automatics".

Here are the large capacity Fabric-Matic washers.

Key Facts

The A108 was my grandmother's washer and was also a "Fabric-Matic" as it had three cycles for Normal/PP/Delicate but only one speed. Standard Capacity, dark blue tub. I have never seen a speckled tub in a '08 series washer - white or dark blue/gray.

Maytag always had a very rich, deep brown - as did Kenmore. In later years when the shading had been abandoned, they were even more beautiful all one solid color.
