"What a world; what a world."

I guess soon all the things of true beauty will reside in the hands of collectors and gay men while the rest of the world goes after WalMart and shopping channel "collectible" merchandise. A friend who has loved Wedgewood China since she was a girl told me that much of it is now made in China and someplace else, not in Stoke-on-Trent. Waterford's classic designs are gone or severely twitched up and not for the better to appeal to people with little or no taste. Dansk used to mean fine design. Now it means third world. How sad.

while the rest of the world goes after WalMart

That is my perception, too.

My recent sad--but not surprised--moment came when I saw a display at some mass market store of dishes. They were fairly cheap. And the marketing ploy was along the lines of how these dishes were perfect for all uses--daily to entertaining. I suppose they looked OK enough for very informal entertaining--although, given the third world manufacturing status, I wouldn't use them even as daily dishes. (Too many lead in the glaze stories.) But I can see how many people would buy a full set, and think, "I'm ready for anything!"

I look back at my grandmother. She was a small town house wife. And yet she had silver flatware. She even used it. I was told it was her daily flatware except when serving eggs. It's amazing to contrast her with the modern world....
