Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

GE PORTABLE DW

Yes this looks like the last of the GE DWs that didn't wash well, once GE went to the newer horizontal motor and better designed wash arms they really started to clean dishes. And when they finely got rid of the cheap plastisol coated tubs they actually lasted more than ten years.

John?

The ancestors of these 1966 machines, the first GE front loading dishwashers, introduced in 1962 apparently washed very well. Two models were check-rated by Consumer Reports so I would assume that they had something good going on inside there. What happened? What changed? We had one, but, as usual, I can't vouch for its cleaning ability because Mother hand washed everything before it went in.

My Aunt in Flrida had a 1962 GE built-in, that was installed in her house, by the builder.

It washed quite well and it was about 16 years old when she replaced it. Was still washing perfectly, but a hole had rusted in the bottom of the tub.

I loaded it once and put in dirty dishes without rinsing them (when she wasn't looking). They came out great.

POOR WASHING GE DW

Ken I am not sure what happened that these GEs were initially rated very well and later so poorly by CRs. If you look at the big test report that CRs did in 1966 you will see that this model was in the next to last group of acceptable machines. And CRs made the comment that while the following models are inferior in washing performance to the preceding machines many consumers may still find them acceptable. [ translated you have to pre-rinse ]

I think that what happened was everyone else got much better as they redesigned thier machines. In the 1966 report the KA KDI-15, A WH with the rectangular filter and a WP DW were all check rated as being superior performers.

I am basing my comments not only on CRs but on our own families experiences with a 1966 Hi end GE built in DW. When my parents moved to Minnesota in 1976 the house had an almost never used GE machine. And even with a gas water heater and a brand new water softener right under the kitchen this machine did a poor job leaving little bits of food hidden in many places. It did not hold a candle to the 1974 WP that my parents left behind or even the repair prone 1966 D&M built KM machine that my parents started out with. We also had a good family friend and they had a KM roto-rack TL portable KM DW. And when they remodeled thier kitchen I found them a 1966 GE built in machine that I rebuilt [ it even had the useless silver shower arm under the silver ware basket ] And Sandy always said that the GE never worked as well as the KM RR machine did. But all in all it sure beat not having a DW. But if you are used to better it a hard pill to swallow. I replaced my parents machine around 1980 when WP came out with thier first electronic machine with the tilt out control panel. And now mom has a KA KD 24 series machine that also handles Bob loads with no problems ever.

GE Dishwashers!

I knew so many people that had BOL GE DW's in apt buildings. So many rinsed so it was had to tell if they any good.
Ken is it possible to post the full review from consumer reports?
Thanks
Peter
