Instead of a hand blender-for what your are doing--would suggest you go to a countertop model.Yes--Blendtecs and VM is expensive-but worth it-just one of those will outlast and outperform several hand blenders.

I've had my Braun stick blender for at least 25 years now, still works great. A few months ago I lucked out and found a Bamix (Swiss made) stick blender with all the attachments and stand for a measly $10 at the Restore. They're hugely expensive new

Bamix hand blenders rock!  I bought one at the Montreal Home show when hubby and I first moved into town in 1994 - yes it was expensive ($130 at the time) but it is a truly amazing appliance.  You got a truly great deal, there Pete!!

I agree

Bamix rocks. Had mine for 13 years now, going strong like on the first day.
My aunt has had hers for almost 40 years now, just the same.
I absolutely love this extra blade for meat and veggie fibers, imagine celery stalks completely liquefied for soups (no strings wound around the blades).
And the cream/froth disc is great: You dip the running wand into the jug and slowly pull it up all the way to the top only one time: Whipped cream done. If you plunge it in 2 - 3 more times, the cream gets so thick and rich to make it great for decorating purposes (almost like butter cream).
You can even froth up low fat milk, I tried it: It keeps standing on apple pie like cream. Ok, not as long lasting but nevertheless a good substitute.
And that thing is so silent and so modest with energy. Never any other. Get one if you can afford it, you won't regret it. Basic models start at 39.90 € here, going up to 179.-, no idea about America though.
