Does anyone know whether some of the more esoteric European manufacturers (Asko, Beko, SMEG, Fagor, Blomberg) are still making their own dishwashers, or are they just getting them from China? or from the plant (Beko?) in Slovenia?

Scanning some of the manufacturers at some of the mail order providers is kind of unclear (plus they don't have "printed in" listed on the user materials). There are some with water softeners I'm curious about for our place in Palm Springs.

Remind me WHY we are concerned about where or who is manufacturing a particular product?

Also, can you really judge a product on that criteria at all?

I mean lots of products are partially made in one place with components made some where else, then shipped and sold in another country.

And society continues roaring forward.  Better than ever.

The concept of "american made" or "Chinese made" means nothing.

If a company's stock is majority owned by people in country<span style="text-decoration: underline;"> A,</span>

the company has an image of being in country <span style="text-decoration: underline;">B</span>,

they farm out the manufacturing to countries <span style="text-decoration: underline;">C, D, & E</span>,

and they sell in countries <span style="text-decoration: underline;">A-R </span>

then what country is that product from?

Does it matter?

There was a time (60s,70s) when the U.S. based companies actually made stuff in the U.S. territory.   and frankly reliablity and efficiency wasn't all that great.

It wasn't until the doors to competition around the globe that the consumer started seeing improvements in reliability and responsible manufacturing.

Beko and Blomberg are both owned and made by Arcrelik.
Don't know where there manufacturing is based for them, bot they are Turkish in origin.

Good "cheap" machines over here. Not terribly reliable, but not horrible for what you pay here.

Asko is owned by Gorenje and thus by Hisense.

But their DW design isn't really at all related to those.
Totally different beast.
Closest thing is the programming which has similarities.

Fagor as Fagor dosen't exist anymore.
If anything is branded Fagor, it isn't related to the Spanish brand that once was.

Smeg is still it's own thing.
Considered "higher end", but really low market share here so very little I know about their actual quality.

But I have been looking at replacing my current DW with one for the itnterim to just try out.

Why be concerned---because if you find a bargain buying some weird low-volume brand in the US (that's a big volume brand in the EU) you might have a fighting chance to find the odd filter/rack/... that you break 2 years in.

Compare that with trying to source a fine filter for some OEM Chinese-manufacturer...oy!

I live this with our cars--I drive a 2009 Saab where parts are still easily available (even sheet metal parts) and a 2019 Buick TourX (made by Opel, after the spinoff) where parts are a bit more of a struggle to procure.

I'm trying to find a reasonably inexpensive DW here in the US with a water softener (for our condo in Palm Springs).

"DW here in the US with a water softener "

wow, I've never seen that.

Maybe installing an actual water softener for your unit? That way you can enjoy soft water at all the plumbing fixtures.

I know FLA. has hard water. When I lived there a year ago it was so nice once I got the softener installed and took that first shower with clean water.

Well I hope you find what you're looking for.

Welll bradfordwhite, dishawshers with integral water softeners are quite common in Europe and other international locales. About 5-9 years ago, KitchenAid offered 2 models with wster softener. But again, U.S. consumers are too ignorant to appreciate the feature just as they have no appreciation for onboard washer water heating with being able to specify some target wash temperatures.

dish drawers with water softener

We have our eye on the Fisher & Paykel dish drawers that have water softener.
The model numbers with an ‘H’ in it have a softener.

Bob, I don't know about others but I would def. appreciate an onboard heater. That's a great idea. Most washers in EU countries have them.

As for the water softener inside the DW, it just goes to show that I haven't seriously looked at dishwashers for the last 20 years. My perspective is the Kenmores, GEs, and Whirlpools from the 70s to the 90s. lol.

I do have a positive experience with the Bosch as I've used one a few times. It was so quiet but I have no idea if it had a softener.

Peter, aside from the Benchmark series, the select Bosch models with softener are also the ADA ones. There MAY be one 800 series model with a softner, but what's available is a different story these days.

I was under the assumption that all Miele dishwashers had a softener built in them from the time they started being sold in N.America back in the 80s or whenever. I've never seen one that didn't.
